DescriptionKing Feature Syndicate Inc. 1919As Krazy Kat would say, "I'm heppy heppy ket" and very proud to add this piece to my collection, published on this day 105 years ago! George Herriman's hilarious, poetic masterpiece Krazy Kat graced the pages of America's newspapers for nearly thirty years. Like any great work of art, Krazy Kat's thematic complexity is masked by its seeming simplicity. Krazy Kat is about love with a brick as message of love, Krazy Kat is not so much about the triumph of love as it is about the unquenchable will to love and to be loved in a dreamlike, almost surreal atmosphere, making the reading of each page totally absorbing and makes the reader get carried away by the magic of this world so unreal and at the same time so real. And as Patrick McDonnell said, “Krazy Kat is timeless, all great art is timeless. It’s made with presence and stays in the present. It doesn’t age - it just is.” Bill Watterson creator of Calvin & Hobbes: "Krazy Kat was not very successful as a commercial venture, but it was something better. It was art." "Krazy Kat, the daily comic strip of George Herriman is, to me, the most amusing and fantastic and satisfactory work of art produced in America to-day." Gilbert Seldes wrote those words in his book "The 7 lively arts" (Harper & Brothers, 1924), he was an American writer and art critic. In recent years this Sunday strip was republished in the books: Krazy Kat: a celebration of Sundays (Sunday Press 2010), Krazy and Ignaz 1919-1921 (Fantagraphics Books, 2020) and Krazy Kat (La Cúpula, 2023). Note: "I wund who's' kissing him now?" with "him" replacing "her," is a reference to one of the more popular songs of the early 1900s. Signed by Herriman 21.5"x18" Social/Sharing |

A fantastic feat of design for its time to be able to command your attention thoughout in a sequence at the dawn of cartoon storytelling. It has such an ease with the narrative flow.
