DescriptionArt Adams seemingly burst on the mid-80s scene fully formed, like Athena emerging from the head of Zeus. His hyper-detailed style made a huge impression on me as a kid, and he's done relatively little interior work, so I was stoked to get one of his pages. Longshot introduced Adams to the world, and the two-part Asgardian story made him a star. I was especially glad to get a page with the whole junior team on it, since they spend most of the story broken into separate adventures. Illyana even has her sword and a little armor. I prefer the leaner, more distinct faces Adams was doing back then as well. The central panel features most of them looking forward at the reader, which is no mean feat when they're also interacting with each other. The layout has palindromic panel sizes. Note also the pop music themed-towels with "Beat It" and "Big Country." Plus some nice atmospheric effects (literally) in the last panel. The laughter in the first panel was the work of Adams. Each has a character-appropriate swimsuit. Dani and Illyana flaunt as usual. Sam can't afford a real bathing suit. Shy Rahne keeps covered in a windbreaker; as a redhead, she ought to have a brimmed hat too. Hopefully she's wearing SPF100 sunblock. Brazilian Bobby sports a Speedo. Check out the various hand gestures in the middle panel, from Roberto's frustration to Rahne nervously clutching her arm while Dani points like a boss. Another fun fact from panel one: Illyana is left-handed, a detail not consistently honored even by Adams or Sienkiewicz. One of Rob Liefeld's artists bought this page from Adams in 1994 but sold it to his boss to pay the bills. It eventually made its way to me. I was able to show it to Art Adams at the Lake Como Comic Art Festival in 2023. It was also shown and discussed in my interview with Bill Cox for Comic Arts LIVE on August 14, 2023. Social/Sharing |

Superb. The stuff of dreams as far as I'm concerned (Asguardian Wars is as big as the Dark Phoenix saga for me).

They never looked better! Adams was a rock star just from his short runs and annuals that were a special event and must haves no matter where he appeared. It has become the same way with his art and these early pages when seen as events unto themselves.

These characters were so human and so fully-realized--such great characterization, each with their own voice. Love it. And I remember Dani's swimsuit *very* well!

One benefit of the transmode virus? No more sunscreen! Lucky, Warlock. What a sweet early Adams page. All that fantastic detail, the whole team, and crisp Austin inks, to boot. Sweet score. Congrats!
