DescriptionProduction Cel with matching painted Background from the 1977 Rankin Bass Television production of the Hobbit. (I caught it on VHS).Gandalf and the (rather well spoken) Lord of Eagles express their gratitude to one another, while the wind-battered Thorin & Company share a quick respite along the edge of Mirkwood forest, "a terrible and dangerous place." But it's short lived, as Gandalf has pressing business elsewhere: "I am already late because of bothering with you people." (pretty cold if you ask me). Obtained this setup from a generous CAF member (Paul Bussolini), who saw my previous Hobbit storyboards and reached out (as they were originally his!). That said, I'm thrilled to have this wonderful art gracing my home. This movie was animated in Japan by Topcraft (which later evolved into Studio Ghibli), based on character designs by Lester Abrams as interpreted by Tsuguyuki Kubo, with background designer Minoru Kishida. Presenting this setup along with matching storyboard panel. Also showing a frame from the actual film. Notice how much of the cel is cut out of the final image. Social/Sharing |

Great matching set! Putting them together would be quite tough and at best a long shot if they were separated, so congratulations!

Hey thanks! Your Fat Albert cast (with panning background) is pretty epic!

Walt Simonson was friends with Lester Abrams and helped illustrate a coffee table book of the movie.

This is stunning, and to have the storyboard to go with it, is magical. Pun intended. And that painted background is a work of art in and of itself. I hope more of these surface.

Thanks for the comment. I also like the painterly quality of the backgrounds in this movie.
