Description

Gollum paddles out to his lake island in search of his Birthday present after battling Bilbo in a game of riddles (Bilbo cheated).

The Hobbit book (1937, revised in 1966) describes Gollum as a small slimy creature. “As dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face.”

Animation cel presented on a printed background (screen grabbed from the film). Gollum based on character designs by Lester Abrams and Tsuguyuki Kubo.

Brilliantly portrayed by the German born actor Brother Theodore.

"gollum... gollum"

Discovered this very recently that there was an animated Hobbit film from 1967, directed by Gene Deitch (creator of those bizarre early 60s Tom & Jerry shorts). Enter the twilight zone:  The Hobbit 1967 Gene Deitch

With more amphibious traits in the design, this might have been considered for the Peter Jackson big screen adaptation at some point.

Thanks for the comment!  Every Tolkien adaptation seems to have their own unique take on Gollum.  I feel that they borrowed some of this adaptation's frogginess (new word) for the Peter Jackson/Andy Serkis version.  This one certainly feels the creepiest.
