DescriptionYears ago (in 2011), while randomly browsing eBay, I came across some listings for these really interesting black and white gauche paintings that are all from some guy named Earl Norem. This name and the style of these paintings are both vaguely familiar, so I start googling his name and am hit with this sudden epiphany that here is this one single guy who illustrated a huge chunk of my childhood: illustrations in the magazines of my dad's that I would sneak a peek at when no one was around (he never had a single copy of Playboy or Penthouse in the house, but he did have some of the early-to-mid 70s men's adventure magazines from the period of time when they regularly included topless photos. I would have been 7 or 8 at the time and I'm guessing he or my mom wised up and threw them all out shortly thereafter - I'd pretty much forgotten about the illustrations in these magazines until the Norem listings jogged my memory); covers to the Conan comic books I'd bought at the flea market as a kid, based on the covers alone; the cool artwork that fleshed out the world of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy line I'd played with when younger; and even stories in the Reader's Digests that I used to read at my grandmother's house. It sort of blew my mind when I realized everything he had worked on over the decades that I had encountered.Well, I decided it would be neat to get my hands on one of these paintings, as a one time only thing that might be cool to have hanging in my personal library/man-cave one day. So, I bid on a couple and manage to snag this one. A few days later it arrives and I was blown away by how it looked even better in person. I was absolutely mesmerized as I held it in my hands, soaking in all the little details and just the absolute coolness of it all - this one of kind thing that was now mine. Thus began an interest in original art that has continued ever since. Completely by chance, I managed to pick up the original rough sketch and prelim for this piece as well. I have a few other originals from Norem, but this one will always be special, since it's the one that kicked off an interest in original art that continues today. Social/Sharing |

Amazing!
I appreciate it! It was a much more expensive purchase than I would have ever imagined at the time, since it pulled me down the rabbit hole of collecting.
