DescriptionI'm just giddy about this latest addition to my collection. I love Whilce's work on this book. At the risk of having a mob form on me, I was more of a Whilce fan during this era than I was a Jim Lee fan.The image of Bishop on this page is my absolute favorite visual of his run (and possibly ever). Prior to getting this page, I couldn't really put a finger on why. There are 3 credited inkers on this issue - Scott Williams, Art Thibert and Karl Alstaetter. I was fairly positive that this wasn't Scott's work so I reached out to Karl to see if he could shed some light. Karl cleared up that it wasn't him either but said he recalls it was Whilce (uncredited). So I reached out to Jo and Whilce and sure enough, they confirmed he penciled AND inked this page himself. So glory, glory...this is an all-Whilce page which also solved the mystery of why I gravitated so much to this image when I was younger. I cannot accurately or eloquently express how much of a nostalgic and artistic thrill this page is for me. Social/Sharing |

Great early Bishop piece, that half splash lower panel is truly an Uncanny image from that era.

Wow you sly fox hitting a grand slam at the end of the year. Talk about a top teir piece. Can't get more 90's x-men iconic than this page, and an all-Whilce page, and a full figure Bishop!! Damn, look at all those slick feathering lines. Definitely a highlight in any collection but, your's already has a lot of show stoppers so it just goes to show how impressive this one is. Congrats.

I think this is a sign you should grow your hair out! I'll bring you the bandana to Heroes next year. But in all seriousness, this is an epic Bishop page!!

Great page! Lots of spotted blacks, which is Whilce's style, but was not really allowed back then by the editors. They wanted to see hatching instead.
I suppose he got away with it this time because of the theme of the page (corpse in a dark barn) and deadlines (this being page 30).
PS I was also more into Whilce's art than Jim's.

High five, dude! I also really love his rendering of the tree line. Almost completely obscured by word balloons on the published page.

I think that to anyone paying attention to the creators back when, the Portacio vs Lee debate (internally or with friends) was a given (much like the Adam vs Andy Kubert one ^^). Wild raw energy VS a more classical approach. I know my answer(s) then and my answer(s) now ;)
What I prefer about the page is the heavy use of blacks and shadows.
(thankfully, both we, as a society and species, and Bishop outgrew the mullet haircut).

Don't keep us in suspense, man! What were your answer(s) then and your answer(s) now???

Excellent prime Portacio example. Lee was probably more refined, but Portacio was definitely holding his own there!

WOOOO!!! Ric Flair exclamation for you there, buddy. Quintessential Bishop shot if there ever was one. Imposing, hair flowin', and pure badass. I know how over the proverbial moon you were to nab this one, man. Pure Portacio power, pal! Huge congrats!
