DescriptionThis is a sensational Frank Thorne Red Sonja splash page from Red Sonja #8 (1978). Sonja is in a noose, about to be hanged by Oryx when the macho Suumaro swings in to save her, while spouting some very sexist dialog (he is a barbarian, after all). Thorne packs in a lot into this page and it would make an ideal addition to the collection of any Red Sonja fan. About Red Sonja Red Sonja first appeared in Marvel's Conan the Barbarian #23 (1973). She was loosely based on the character of Red Sonya of Rogatino from a 1934 Robert E. Howard short story. Even though she was created in a Marvel comic, Conan and his related characters, including Red Sonja, are the property of the Robert E. Howard estate, which licensed Dynamite to publish her adventures starting in 2005. The character has always had a strong cult following. In November of 2017 it was announced that a new Red Sonja movie was in the works to be financed by Millennium Media and directed by Bryan Singer. The movie has been delayed because of Singer's well publicized problems. Early this year, it was announced that Jill Soloway, the creator of the award-winning series Transparent will be directing the film. An interesting choice for certain as it's hard to think of two media properties that are as different as Red Sonja and Transparent. About the Artist Frank Thorne began his career in the late Golden Age and worked primarily for Dell Comics in the Silver Age. He's best known though for this Bronze Age work on Red Sonja for Marvel. Following that period, Thorne subsequently created a number of erotic fantasy comics and characters for Playboy, Heavy Metal, and National Lampoon.Social/Sharing |
