DescriptionFelix put this up after SDCC as part of their at home 'con' sale. I couldn't' believe I'd actually nabbed this one at one of their infamous drops, as the items they list are known to go very quickly... I've had a few fails myself. It wasn't an expense I expected as they don't show off all of the pieces beforehand, but I couldn't pass up on Harren rendering the Black Panther. It has finally arrived, and I'm blown away... I was not expecting an 11x17 size.James Harren needs no introduction as one of the most exciting and unique modern cartoonists. His unique rendering style with thick lines, ink splatter, hatching and hyper engaged anatomy makes his stuff unmistakable and unmistakably awesome. Here however he's working primarily as an inker... interpreting pencils done by none other than Jack Kirby, in his own way. He's done this at least one before with a Spider-Man piece, and I think he's proven that in another universe where he and Kirby breathed the same air in the same era, they'd have tore up any comic book page laid before them together You can see his respect for Kirby's lighting, shading, and speed lines. His personal touch is preserved, but Harren's input comes through beautifully, especially in the hands, lower torso, and cowl that the Panther bears. I have a soft spot for the blue colored, simplistic classic Black Panther suit, with the ribbed gloves and boots being a signature facet. Close examination shoes that detail was not lost on Harren, who uses white outs, brief strokes and even a bit of inkwash spatter to make sure the details come out exactly as he wants it, even in the background elements. I could gush about this piece all day. Many, many thanks to Felix Comic Art for the patience and being very easy to work with. Hopefully this is the first of many purchases through them(if I'm fast enough on the reload)! Social/Sharing |
