DescriptionHolbein Acryla-Gouche. 20"x26"Wraparound trade cover of Aftershock Comics' JIMMY'S BASTARDS VOL 1, which comes out in February, done exclusively for Newbury Comics. You can always tell when you know you're going to enjoy a job. First, it's subject matter you really love, and second, you put a helluva lot more work into it than originally agreed upon, simply because you want to! When Joe Pruett at Aftershock asked me if I'd be interested in doing an exclusive cover for my buddy Garth Ennis's new book (about a secret agent with hundreds of illegitimate children), there was really no hesitation, and I instantly knew what I wanted to do! Obviously, if you're thinking "James Bondish character", you can't help but remember all the cool Robert McGinnis illos from the 60's/70's. I wanted to do a retro piece in that vein, with Jimmy and a hot spy girl. That rolled over into me adding a few more spy girls, which in turn rolled into me inquiring as to whether I could do a wraparound (as the girls just kept appearing on my drawing board)! lol I switched over from my normal acrylics to Holbein's Acryla-Gouache (gouache with a bit more permanance and less susceptibility to water damage), in an attempt to maintain the period flavor with a dry, draggy paint and a somewhat flatter rendering approach, but I think my natural style seemed to prevail for at least 90 % of the piece. I did find the gouache interesting as I couldn't use my normal glazing and highlighting process, but had to mix colors beforehand and drybrush and feather a lot. Remarkably easy to use, even though I hadn't used gouache in over 30 years. I really love those paints and plan to employ them a lot more often. Social/Sharing |
