DescriptionI haven't painted a Conan cover in almost 15 years. While the Savage Sword covers were a great time in my career, I did them while still in my early to mid twenties, still teaching myself how to paint. I've always wanted another crack at the big lug, so I was extremely excited when Tom Stewart asked me to paint the cover to his new book, "By This Axe I Rule!" 'Conan and the Battle for the Robert E. Howard Legacy' to be published by Hermes Press. 15"x21" on Bainbridge Board. BTW, for whatever reason my scanner is just not capturing this piece properly. I'll have a better scan up as soon as I get film of it shot.Social/Sharing |

Joe, when I think your art is the best it can be, you go and show us something better. Incredible stuff, as always. I don't know what you're tapping into to get such a clear vision of these fictional characters, but I wish I had the knack you have.

No action needed! This is a look that would make a lesser man just drop his sword and run! Bring us more Conan by Crom !

Astounding as usual, Joe! The facial expression, the body language, the Hyborean design, and the gloomy rainy atmosphere are all sheer perfection. That left hand and the expert foreshortening of the left arm are testament to your mastery. You have given us more than a painting of Conan; truly a portrait of a flesh and blood man. I am in awe....

I can feel and hear the rain and I am not going to look for trouble with that big guy !!! Awesome work, perfect rendition of Conan, even better than the Neal Adams print with Conan under the rain. Very savage work !!!

I will just have to say ditto to what everyone else has already said. My natural response was a profane word and a small sortve gurgle... this is awesome.

Hi Joe, O.K. Holy Crap! Your cover work for "By This Axe I Rule" is one of the best Conan pieces I've ever seen! I'm comparing it to the likes of Boris and Whelan's "ELRIC" which are both sitting pretty at the top of my list of fav's! I'm going to pick up a copy of this when it comes out for the cover alone! Whoa! Just catching up with new work at CAF when I checked this stunning Conan painting out! Awesome work Joe from the rain drops splashing, the musculature, the facial expression... I could go on and on... Wow!

Great! Your paintings always come alive for me. Conan looks like he is looking directly at the viewer. If he were alive, you wouldn't want to go near him right at this moment.

Great piece Joe! Luv the composition of the stand alone figure. Solid. The painting nuance in the skin texture and lighting are great. Wonderful features and expression in his face as well. Cheers man.
