Gage Prentiss is a Rhode Island-based artist who has done a lot of work of interest to the cosmic horror set (like me, for instance).

I recently acquired one of an unknown but small number of maquettes Gage Prentiss created to help finance the creation of his large bronze figure of Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

Prentiss' statue highlights several character traits. Howard carries a telescope, emblematic of his love for science and particularly his early fascination with astronomy; and a book from which tentacles sprout, and I hardly think I need to explain that. One of his beloved cats shelters near his feet.

The last I heard, Prentiss' completed bronze was in a warehouse somewhere. Sadly, or not, depending on how you feel about it, it seems Providence feels the problematic Mr. Lovecraft has been honored enough, and is unwilling to give him further public space. There lies a minefield.

I feel sorry for Howard, but he was a genius, and genius settles down where it will.

As a fan of the great writer I feel that there should be more love on the site for work inspired by him. Your avatar has a slightly familiar look by the way.
