Description11 x 17 page from Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise #2, published in 2022 by Marvel ComicsThis page from the second issue of Fall Sunrise stood out at the recent Felix Comic Art drop. It’s a skillfully executed page, the beauty of which derives from Moore's thoughtful approach to how rendering and page design complement story and character. Although this page in the story is a vehicle for delivering exposition, Moore doesn’t treat it as a talking heads page. I’d encourage you to look at the multiple visual contrasts Moore establishes between the left and right halves of the page, how much space is taken up by the figures on the page, how those figures are rendered, and the panel design choices on the left and right sides. All of the choices Moore makes on this page reinforce a theme that’s present for much of the first two issues of Fall Sunrise: namely, just how out of place and relatively ineffective Strange is in the earliest parts of the story. On the whole, Fall Sunrise contains some of Moore’s strongest art to date from beginning to end. What’s often lost in the conversation about the price or long term value of his pages is the value in seeing an artist evolve and improve with each new project. In Fall Sunrise, Moore visualizes the story in ways that are delightful and unexpected even if you’ve read his previous work. Sparse panel pages with elegantly spotted blacks and minimally rendered figures are followed by expansive splashes rich in organic or architectural detail. Design-heavy title pages and chapter headers are complemented by interior pages with offbeat panel arrangements. Most important, Moore’s approach to the art always registers as intentional and for narrative impact rather than an attempt to goose original art sales with superficial flash. Adding this page, only my second piece from a Marvel comic, was also intentional even though it may seem out of step with other pieces in my collection. My collection primarily features “independent” artists who work outside of the Big Two sausage mill. However, from a different vantage point, the vast majority of pieces in my collection are from “writer-artists.” These pieces represent a single creator’s complete vision for how art and story work together. With this piece, I’m adding Tradd Moore to that writer-artist grouping. He’s already shown that he’s a terrific artist with his previous projects. With Fall Sunrise he shows that he also has a genuine voice as a writer. I hope the financial cushion provided by the sale of his original art gives him the freedom to explore stories that interest him and encourage his evolution as a complete storyteller. When I read this page in the comic, I remember thinking that the OA would probably be outstanding. Amazing contrast of textures and next-level storytelling, as you mention. A great fit for your collection. Congrats!

I was mystic only child of the universe
And then art found you
And then art found you
You Ancient One and I am reading comics
Spinning around you
Spinning around you
You are too good to be true
The Strangest
But Fall Sunrise you
But Fall Sunrise you
I know it’s so damn pretty inks that bleeds through
But not as much as I do
As Moore as I would, yeah
'Cause you're the Tradd of a dying breed
Doctor Strange is the best unleashed
I wonder if your therapist knows everything of Mark V
I'm here in search of Moore glory
There's been a million be Fall me
That ultra-kind of love
Your artwork drop away from
You're just the Tradd of surreal ones
You're just the Tradd of the real ones
You're just the Tradd of surreal ones

So, if my count is correct: one Punisher page, one Crossfire page, one Zot cover. And now a Doctor Strange. Your fourth super-hero page. There might be hope for you after all.

A major addition as regards modern art !
For my tastes, Moore's peak stilistically was around his Venom 150 book even though I have and will follow him on any project before and since. His Dr stange effort has certainbly been impressive visually.
(and oh, I'm sure you made many many friends with your " Big Two sausage mill " comment, which I LOVED. To be fair however, if you love pure art and storytelling, the majority of great artists are to be found in mainstream comics in the US, drawing capes and underpants).

Thanks as always! My 'sausage mill' comment was more directed toward the American comic industry than the quality of the artists who've worked for the Big Two 😂.
As someone who's read thousands of comics, the majority of which have been superhero-based, I have a lot of favorites (Kirby, Rude, Adams, Perez) who have both worked for the big two and struck out on their own. I wish there had been more opportunities for those and other artists to develop careers and stories in a sustainable way. I think Tradd can probably do anything he wants now so I'd like to see what stories he has in him even if he needs to dip back into the superhero world eventually.

Outstanding page! Nice to see you taking a substantial second dip into the "Big Two sausage mill" lol. We are currently enjoying a new golden age of Western comics, IMO, with so many amazing creators in both mainstream and indy.

Mark, this may indeed by a Dr Strange page, but this is the furthest thing from a mainstream superhero art as you can get. So don't worry, you're still safe! Gorgeous work.

Once again, Tradd Moore demonstrates a comic art sensibility unlike any other. The journey Stephen Strange takes over the course of the miniseries is so surreal. so unusual, that one is tempted to tune out the story and just enjoy the ride. But I think there's a lot more to the storytelling than most people suspect. Tradd is teaching comic book readers a new visual language, in which violence is set aside in favor of contemplation of our place in the universe. Doctor Strange's journey is our journey and Tradd Moore is guiding us along the path.

Fabulous, incredible, gorgeous page. There were so many to choose from but this was in my top 3, congrats! While I understand where FM is coming from, as I love that particular style/era of Tradd (and desperately hope to someday obtain a Venom 150 page) I also agree that Tradd's evolution is fascinating to watch, DSFS not withstanding. Tradd's art has always been bold in it's execution. He has always taken risks and played with the medium in ways that mystified and downright confused many people into simply ignoring him which I attribute to be a burdon of his genius. I love that Tradd uses each project to explore new territories on the page; while I have my favorites as well, I always find myself anxiously anticipating his next move. IMO we are all lucky to have a front row seat to a modern master in the making.

Appreciate the thoughtful comment, Justin, and your perspective as a seasoned Tradd collector. His work is really special and he seems really committed to his growth as an artist. I'm glad we'll both be able to read (and collect) his work for, years to come.

Outstadning. Strong otherworldly quality (this IS Moore doing Doc Strange) and love the contrast of the hathy detailed images vs the block spot blacks. Must make for even better viewing in person. Congrats!

Absolutely stunnning Tradd Moore page from Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise. Like you I admire Tradd's work on this book, the layouts are phenomenal. and the drawing is absolutely stunning. I love the contrast between the tall panel on the left and the six smaller panels on the right. Even the textures of the art are different, with the delicately shaded figures in the left hand panel and the stark black and white effects on the right. Tradd's work blows me away with the mindfulness of every choice he's making. There is so much thought put into every page, every panel. I eagerly look forward to what Tradd has in store for us next.
