DescriptionAnyone who knows me, knows my all time favorite comic run is the Claremont/Byrne X-Men issues 108-143, so many GREAT stories and art contained in those issues! When I get a bit of free time, I enjoy revisiting those issues by coming up with alternate takes of covers or scenes. So when I started working on what I would do next, I thought of the Magneto storyline from 113. My spin would be the post battle crisis when the volcano was collapsing all around the team. So this cover shows Colossus struggling to hold a massive chunk of the volcano allowing the team to escape, putting himself in a very precarious situation. The old Jimmy Dean song "Big Bad John" was also an influence when coming up with this idea:"Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out a groan And like a giant Oak tree, he just stood there alone, Big John" Yeah, I know the scene wasn't in the actual comic, but my imagination likes to wander between panels sometimes (I've include a detailed scan for a more close up shot). If you drop a comment on the piece, let me know what your favorite Claremont/Byrne storyline is. The Savage Land arc is my favorite! Hats off to Terry Austin on the run too, his inking is UNBELIEVABLE! I like to think of Austin as an talent multiplier, he makes everyone's work look so much better! What a talent!! Social/Sharing |

I have to say this is cool. You did the Carnival/111 cover for me as a Legion piece and rocked it

I love those issues as well. The original cover to this issue sold recently. There is also an unpublished version inked by someone unknown from what I remember.
This is great art, I like your version better.

Epic and inspiring work. I have to say, you're channelling a very Austinesque style with the inking too - no mean feat!

Absolutely Colossal rendition! I’ve often felt the original cover was all background, meaning no foreground or focal figure (tho Byrne may not have designed it), and ripe for reimagining, which you nailed! Also, it seems crazy to me that we haven’t seen the X-Men’s greatest epic adventure movie X-MEN: ENTER THE SAVAGE LAND!
