DescriptionMy fondest and deepest memories of the King still lie with his work at Marvel. Indeed, I was quite shocked when I saw the cover of The New Gods #1 (with the words "Kirby is here!" at the top). I did purchase and read many of the books in his Fourth World Series and enjoyed them, albeit not to the degree that I experienced with his Marvel books. It was therefore quite a relief for me when he returned to Marvel. Perhaps this is why my collecting focus has been on artwork from his time at Marvel. That having been said, his artwork at DC was also quite - no pun intended - fantastic as well. And this was especially so when Mike Royer inked his work. To me at least, Royer was to Kirby at DC what Sinnott was to Kirby at Marvel. So I finally broke my duck when I obtained this piece. It is a wonderful - and really dynamic - splash of Mister Miracle and is quite close to the actual cover to that issue. And, of course, it was inked by Royer. However, this artwork also served as a grim reminder - much as we enjoy (or even love) this hobby, we are necessarily merely stewards of the artwork we obtain (often at great cost as well as sacrifice). This particular piece came from the late Kevin Brogan's estate. I never had the opportunity of meeting him in person but, by all accounts, he was a very nice person and had passed away far too young. All I can say is that this piece of artwork has found a present home where it will certainly be appreciated. Social/Sharing |

Even without the proclamation, this splash says "Kirby is Here!" very loudly. Innovative and bombastic imagery with all the wisdom he gained throughout his career presented in full out power. Royer is up there as a favorite inker of Kirby's art because he knew what effect the king was going for to affect his subjects by creating mythology for modern times.

Many thanks, Marcus, for your characteristic insight. This artwork is both simple yet complex at one and the same (paradoxical) time. Classic Kirby.

I think our experiences with Kirby are somewhat similar. Like most, I was introduced to his work at Marvel. In fact, during those very early days, the only two names I kept seeing in the comics were Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. So as a young kid, I had this image in my head of these two guys just sitting in an office somewhere doing all these comics. LOL! Anyhow, like yourself, I was also always more enamored of his Marvel work. But even though the Fourth World universe he created for DC was much smaller than the vast Marvel universe he helped build at Marvel, it was no less exciting for me. Maybe it was just the newness of it, I don't know. But I'm guessing that it had more to do with that familiar brand of Kirby magic and energy. Yes, it was a different publisher. And yes, they were different characters with different names and different costumes. But The King was still The King, and that was all that mattered. Congratulations on this brilliant splash!

Many thanks, Eric. Having reflected further, I wonder (albeit with the greatest respect to Jack) whether having Stan scripting the stories (well, at least most of them) at Marvel gave that extra zing, so to speak, to the overall books which both of them worked on. However, there is no denying the utter brilliance of the King. Indeed, Stan Lee scripts without brilliant artists such as Jack wouldn't have amounted to very much, in my view.

this one blows my mind!!! One of the best images from the entire run. Royer is pitch perfect over Jack - they don't make title splashes like this anymore which is kind of sad, the blending of the text/title and fine print and Kirby's signature., along with epic art area images is full fledged full wow! congrats.

Whoa, that's siiiick! Like yourself, Kirby was the Marvel Silver Age King and when I discovered the 4th World back issues, I just wasn't anywhere nearly as attracted to the character designs and so I've never read them. But I've certainly enjoyed guest appearances they've made in comics I HAVE read and Mr. Miracle is one of the few characters he created at DC that I WAS always attracted to. That I had a childhood fascination with Harry Houdini and Mr. Miracle is an escape artist, well, it wasn't enough to get me to read this series but it sure did help in making me like the character. Like yourself, in very recent years as I've taken closer looks t the 4th World original art collectors post online, I've come to learn what an incredibly amazing inker Mike Royer was on Kirby! I hesitate to state it with absolute certainty, but I will say that there's a very strong possibility that Royer may possibly be my 2nd favourite Kirby inker, and possibly even tied for favourite with Sinnott. This bombastic splash is absolutely brilliant and you are very fortunate indeed to be able to own it. Kudos, my friend!

Many thanks, Rubén. Yes, I liked Mister Miracle and the New Gods best. To some extent, the Forever People as well. And, like you, the Houdini-type character (with the name of Scott FREE as well) did appeal to me as well. Sinnott is still my favorite inker over Kirby though, but Royer did a fantastic job when Jack crossed over to DC.

Extraordinary title splash! The quality of the pencils and inks is amazing. To me Royer with SInnott were the inkers that made Ikrby's pencils shine more. The King was unique producing/drawing machinery, artifacts and battleships. IT CAN'T BE BETTER.

Wow! What a classic Kirby image! Although Royer's inks sometimes aren't my cup of tea, I think they're great here. Kirby's composition of the torpedo speeding towards the reader with Mister Miracle in full view is superlative. I first saw Kirby art reading reprints of Kirby Fantastic Four stories and discovered his Fourth World art as an adult. This piece is a perfect example of that work. Congratulations CAB!

Royer's inks sometimes are too heavy, perhaps too faithful, for me, such as in the post-DC Captain America books. Personal preference that could change.

That's a good point, Peter. I guess that, because I generally like strong inks, that isn't a problem for me.
