Description

A piece of history, extending beyond the funnybook confines. I've had the comic for almost 40 years, but I never expected to find art from it. This one's a classic, with the cover image shown in the third panel. So much to love with this page, including the wild, exuberant style, reminiscent of both Herrimann and of the early WD artists it mocks. But beyond that, APF represents a comic-cultural legal milestone. O'Neill went to great lengths to get WD to sue him, and they did. It's a fascinating story that I intend to learn more about.
I've been recently contacted by another collector who corresponded with Gary Hallgren concerning who drew what on these pages. I've long thought the elephants were by some other artist's hand. Turns out Hallgren credited those elephants to Bobby London, which I can totally see. He said he thought he (Hallgren) did Mickie and Minnie and the Horses. The vista in the middle left panel looks like O'Neill to me, though Hallgren did not see O'Neill's hand in the page. He did say there were many other artists in and out of the place at the time, so there could be bits by others such as Murphy or Flenniken. If anyone has any info, I'd love to hear it. I still love this page for both its exuberance and its place in comics (and legal) history.
