Description

Greg Capullo (Pencils), Mark Pennington (Inks), Neil Gaiman (Story) - One of the earlier pieces of Spawn-spinoff artwork to come onto the collectors' market, this Neil Gaiman-scripted page finds the friends of Angela -- the battle-hardened angel -- presuming her dead after one struggle too many. Seems that Angela knows better (see final panel). Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 9" x 13.5". Slightly toned with a few tiny spots of staining and retouching. Excellent condition.

This piece plays a small but infamous role in comic book industry history, as one of the issues that Neil Gaiman wrote for and created characters for the Spawn series that led to over a decade long legal battle with creator Todd McFarlane. Neil wrote and created a number of characters including Angela, Cogliostro, Medieval Spawn and Gabrielle during his run on the comics (issue #9, #26, and Angela mini-series) and fought over usage. The dispute was settled between parties in 2012 with Neil Gaiman gaining the rights to Angela, which he subsequently sold to Marvel Comics.
