DescriptionThis new Duke/GI Joe project is a perfect meeting of one of my current favorite artists meeting up with the personally nostalgic properties of GI Joe & Transformers. Few current comics have excites quite like the new Energon Universe. The announcement of it all was made all the more exciting when Tom Reilly was announced as the artist on Duke, a series exploring his role in this new shared universe!I knew once the book came out that I’d love to be able to secure a page featuring a Transformer as well as Duke and sure enough when the issue came out, I saw the perfect page for me. This beautifully laid out page recounts Duke’s encounter with Starscream, as seen in Transformers issue 2. I love how Tom essentially took 3-4 pages of insanely cool Daniel Warren Johnson art and boiled it down to one killer panel page. The whole sequence in here and it reads wonderfully. I especially love Tom’s use of reflections in Duke’s visor as a way to show Duke’s point of view. Just some amazing storytelling from Tom. This to me is a perfect panel page, no words needed and it still reads quite well! Excited to see what is next as this series unfolds and will no doubt last the groundwork for a future GI Joe series. I’m here for all of it! Social/Sharing |

It certainly does have a DWJ vibe! You ended up getting a page with losts of energy and and movement and I love how the first and last panels bookend the middle ones. Congrats!

I completely agree, that was another thing that I found appealing, it just feels so balanced, even in its frenetic storytelling!

It plays out like how Duke saw what happened as he's being debriefed. They try to convince him that it wasn't real, but the way Reilly draws this page, it's meant to be very vivid and stuck in his head no matter how much they try to gaslight him.

I also think he went with heavy shadows on Starscream because it was a memory. So while Duke knew what he saw, he also didn't know, or fully comprehend, what he saw. However the sheer size of this thing, what he thinks is a weapon is what was seared into his memory. A vivid combination of shock & confusion!

Thanks man! It's definitely the one that called out to me! It had everything that I wanted from the story itself, and as a wonderful example of creative storytelling!

Well designed and executed page. There is a lot ot like about it from a pure "art" point of view, very dynamic with an effective layout.

Absolutely agree! While thr subject matter on the page is initially what grabbed my attention, the more I studied the page, the more I appreciated the artistic choices that were made! I really do think it's a darn near perfect example of visual storytelling!

Yowza! Fantastic page featuring the battle between Duke and Star Scream! Grogeous art from Tom Reilly featuring Duke's retelling of his confrontation with the Decepticon! Beautifully laid out and nicely inked page. Great pick-up, congrats!
