DescriptionThis is the title page for a recently published 8-page complete story by Caroline Cash, published in their Pee Pee Poo Poo anthology series. Pee Pee Poo Poo won the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series in 2024.Cash's current work goes against the grain of both contemporary and historical autobiographical cartooning. Although Cash's cartoon persona is front and center for their work, as this beautiful title page illustrates, that persona often comes across as secondary to the subject matter of their stories. So secondary in fact that Cash forgets to leave room for their full name in the bottom right of the page! Whether an inadvertent mistake or not, this conveys that Cash at this point in their career isn't particularly invested in developing an overpowering autobiographical persona in the mold of a Joe Matt or an Alison Bechdel. The cartoon version of Cash is often indirect where other autobiographical cartoonists are direct. "Danny's," Cash's 2023 short story, is a series of observations (both personal and sensory) connected to the closing of a Chicago bar and dance spot. If you're looking for overwrought drama or teeth-gnashing anxiety in Cash's story you won't find it. There's no unrequited love or sketchy bartenders to be found, no final summation filled with regret on how a historic location is no more. Instead, Cash delivers page after page of seemingly scattered sensory observations about Danny's which in the end amount to a personal re-creation of what it meant for Cash to experience Danny's in all its aspects: its music, its patrons, and its atmosphere. I found "Danny's" to be a quiet marvel more for what the story doesn't communicate than what it does. Cash is currently working on a long-form book for the Canadian publisher Drawn and Quarterly and so we might soon see a version of them that conforms to more of the stereotypes of autobiographical cartooning with its preference for the cartoonist who relentlessly plumbs every aspect of their consciousness and experiences. However, for now I'm really enjoying the version of Cash that is less self-consciously autobiographical and less concerned with spotlighting the dramatic highs and lows of their life. And even though we got Cash money
I'm Caroline with you, Danny
And every hand will bring a straight of love, oh, oh, oh
In the drawin', with the lines
You bring a dance of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be alright

I love the musical association and the art style is typical of this type of independent comic, which is very appealing. You always turn up the coolest, esoteric art, Mark!

The promise in Cash's work is definitely there. Hope they have a long career that lets them deliver on that promise.
