DescriptionEven a passing glance at my gallery will show that I am a huge fan of Jeffrey Moy's artwork. My first encounter with his work was while reading Legionnaires at the age of fifteen, and it was one of the defining experiences that helped me to start loving and appreciating comic art as a specific medium, rather than just comic books as a whole. When I learned that I could actually purchase and collect comic art, Jeff's work was some of the first I sought out, but I quickly learned that it wasn't readily available. As such, you might imagine that when I learned Jeff would be doing a claim show on the Comic Art Live YouTube channel, I was quite excited, and I will tell you firsthand that "excited" is nowhere near strong enough a word for how I felt. I'm very, very lucky that I was able to claim three of the pages from that show (and was gifted a fourth). This page here is the first page I claimed during the show, and is also the first piece of art I ever claimed in the CAL YouTube chat, after being a regular viewer for about three years. And what a page it is! Admittedly, the main draw for me was that it has Brainiac 5 on it (even if it's only half of his face, you've gotta take what you can get!). But there's also some lovely renditions of the Legion's founders working to unravel a pretty impressive conspiracy, and a great shot of Valor (soon to be called M'onel), too. The page just shines with the bright, beautiful, optimistic energy that Jeff's work brought to the Legion, even if the page's circumstances are pretty dire. And W.C. Carani's inkwork is truly a sight to behold, especially when viewing the page in person. The starscape in the first panel is gorgeous, and the precise hatching he uses for shading (which Jeff refers to as "tapers") is present in full force. My favourite part of the page is the look Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl (who are just on the precipice of dating, here) share as they're reminded that even though founding the Legion has brought them together, their respective homeworlds are still distrustful of one another due to a recent war. A big thanks to Jeff for bringing this page (and many others) out of the vault to sell, to Bill Cox for organizing the claim show, and to the YouTube chat full of very, very kind people who cheered me on after I made this first claim. It's a moment that will always stick with me, and a true milestone in my collector's journey. Social/Sharing |

It's a beauty of a page with the core featured! The Jeff Moy art is very polished and detailed with purpose running counter to the mid 90's look in other books. Comparatively in the timeline, this must be your silver age for Legion.

You know, Marcus, I'd never thought of it like that before, but I think you're absolutely right! I suppose this version of the Legion is to me what the Silver Age is to most other Legion collectors. Just makes it all the more significant that I've been able to pick up a few pieces from this run!

Thanks, Miki! I do love how the last panel is just a great moment between the founders.
