DescriptionThis was my third and final claim from Jeff Moy's CAF claim show. The 1994 round of DC annuals all fit into their "Elseworlds" theme, which allowed writers to put characters in alternate universes and tell stories that could otherwise never be told within the constraints of canon. I've always loved the Elseworlds theme, and this Legion annual here is one of my favourites. It's a play on the Wizard of Oz, with Ayla Ranzz (AKA Lightning Lass) taking the place of Dorothy. Toto is played by the imp Violet (AKA Shrinking Violet), the scarecrow is played by 5 (Brainiac 5), the tin man is played by ERG (ERG-1/Wildfire), and the cowardly lion is played by Furball (Furball/Timber Wolf). The best part of the annual is that for every new "realm" the party enters, a different artist drew the pages, to give each one its own distinct style. Jeff Moy drew the parts of the annual that took place in the Kingdom of Gandia (a substitute for the Emerald City), and also the domain of the Wicked Witch's stand-in, "Starfinger". This page here takes place right after the party has rescued Prince Valor from the Witch.I love that this page features every member of Ayla's team, and I think Jeff's work was very well-suited for this annual, as it perfectly captures the fairytale elements of the story. Working on this annual was only Jeff's third or maybe fourth time drawing comics professionally, and I'm very glad to own a page featuring some of his earliest published work. You can see that he had already found his style, which would be refined once he became the regular penciller for Legionnaires. Social/Sharing |
