DescriptionChewbacca illustration by Ricardo Drumond. 11x17 pencil/ink.Life Day still has a bit of life left in it! Even though it's later in the day, I couldn't pass up the chance to post a Star Wars related piece today on the anniversary of Life Day (which made it's debut via the Star Wars Holiday special, 43 years ago today on November 17th 1978). Based on the origins of Life Day being originally a Wookie tradition/holiday within Star Wars canon and later being embraced by the rest of the galaxy, it feels appropriate to share a piece of everyone's (or mostly everyone's) favorite Wookie, Chewbacca! This Chewie (Chewbacca) piece was illustrated by Ricardo Drumond, a newer artist in the stable over at Kirby's Comic Art (thanks Annabel!). Life Day synopsis: A longstanding Wookiee tradition, Life Day celebrates the values and tenets of Wookiee culture, including family, joy, and harmony. While Life Day is a celebration traditionally held at the Tree of Life on Kashyyyk and observed by extended Wookiee families, Wookiees throughout the galaxy still mark the day. When Wookiees were enslaved by the Empire, the holiday took on an even greater significance. Today, people from planets across the galaxy have embraced this tradition and made it their own by celebrating with festive décor, twinkling string lights, unique food and drink items, music, and activities. People share the hopes of celebrating freedom, harmony, and peace, no matter how different people may appear. At the end of the day, everyone gathers to sing songs and be reminded of their dedication, courage, and love for one another. This is the promise of the Tree of Life. Song choice: "A Day to Celebrate" by Carrie Fisher (from Star Wars Holiday Special): Social/Sharing |

"Life Day" huh? Nice. Today is also "Wednesday", the day I sit around and celebrate if I win any lots n tonight's auction! I dig the art, by the way. A sweet reminder of the Chewie 12" Action Figure I got for Christmas in 1978!

ha, good luck tonight if you're going after anything, i'm sitting it out! ;)
And damn I bet that 12" Chewie figure would be worth a pretty penny these days (if kept in good condition with the box especially, I assume you played with it though)

Are you kidding? I was an 8 year old boy begging my mother all year long to buy me the Action Figure so I can play with it, not keep it MiB so I could show it off to Star Wars fans and cash it in 43 years later!

I did the same thing with my Star Wars toys from childhood from the late 80s and early 90s, as well as some of the ones that came out during Episode 1. Only now as an adult am I after complete in box figures of course and all my original toys were destroyed, shredded, or garage saled at various points!

That's what buying back our childhood favourites is all about, reliving our youth!

We celebrate a day of peace
A day of harmony
A day of joy we can all share
Together joyously
A day that Itchy watched Diahann Carroll in the darkness
A day that leads us into might
A day Bea Arthur sang Good Night, but not Goodbye
A day that brings the promise
That Art Carney will cook for Lumpy.
To live, to laugh, to dream
To grow, to trust, to love, to be

Great reminder thanks Marcus! Added Carrie's performance from the Holiday Special as the song choice with the youtube clip embedded ;-)

Here's hoping Lumpy gets a new Jefferson Starship music hologram for Life Day this year! Great Chewbacca piece!

A great likeness !! Chewie is not the typical subject for Star Wars drawings. But this one shows how it should be done.

I've rarely laughed as hard as the opening of the Holiday Special, when they all spoke Wookie. (Lol, John C! The first comment!) That is an awesome Chewie. Just perfect. It's not easy to draw hair like that, but Drumond killed it. Nice score. Congrats!

Remember the Late 70's. So ahead of it's time. And that Chewie Rocks.
