DescriptionThere's been a lot of Kaluta art up for grabs at Heritage recently. In particular, it seems like there had been examples of card art that he had created for Legend of the Five Rings (L5R) for several weeks running. Well, after forgetting to pay attention to the live bidding multiple times, I finally caught one and was able to win a piece! This piece of art was done for the card Obi of Silence (see the additional images). In the context of the game, this card represents an item, the sash, or obi, that we see being carefully folded by the nameless character. In RPGs, there it is not uncommon to find an ability called Silence which renders a character unable to use magical abilities (usually called upon by speaking an incantation). The obi can be used on a character to make them unable to perform any actions, earning its name. This would not have necessarily been my first pick of all the Kaluta L5R art that was available at auction, but this is the one I got. It's still an excellent piece that is far more interesting than say, and image of a sash on a table. The character that is folding the sash seems to be doing so with great reverence, a solemn look upon their face. The patterns on both the kimono and the sash both manage to feel organic. Kaluta effortlessly makes believable folds and wrinkles in both objects, making them feel light like real cloth. What stands above everything else for me, though, is the colors. Such a bold array of light and dark colors, delicately muted by shadow. Amazing. Pencil, ink, and watercolor on 10 x 7.5 bristol. And there I was, staring at your new video just before my show on Sunday, grabbing the link to promote on the show (which I only got around to doing just a few minutes after you left!), thinking "Newell picked up some sort of Star Wars piece!". What else could it be, with Obi in the title?!? Now I know there is more than one Obi in the world!
