DescriptionI was reading through Marvel Previews a few months back and I came across this interesting program that Marvel was doing called Marvel Stormbreakers which according to Marvel, the program spotlights the best up-and-coming artists in the comic book industry. This was started in 2020, but for 2023 there was an artist who's work really stood out to me, Martin Coccolo. One of the reasons why was his Stormbreaker Variant cover to Doctor Strange #1. The idea around this group of covers in March 2023 were for the artist to pay Homage to famous art movements. For Martin he paid homage to one of his favorite Spanish artists, Francisco Goya. Francisco Goya is well known for The Black Paintings (Pinturas Negras), a group of 14 paintings from the later years of his life, likely between 1819 and 1823. They portray intense, haunting themes, reflective of both his fear of insanity and his bleak outlook on humanity. When I saw the Doctor Strange cover previewed I reached out to Martin right away. Martin does a lot of his work in digital but this piece was done traditionally in oil. He told me the piece would be up for sale eventually but I didn't know when that would be. So I waited patiently until he was able to sell it to me. This piece is simply amazing in person and is now the highlight of my collection.Year Published: 2023 Social/Sharing |

Jaw-droppingly awesome Doctor Strange cover form Martin Coccolo! What a powerful painting of the Sorcerer Supreme rising above a group of...Werewolves? Morlocks? Some kind of misshapen creatures and Strange appears about to unleash a magic spell. Love the way the creatures are all painted in browns and greys while Strange himself is painted in bright primary colors. I don't know what's going on but I'd like to. And isn't that what covers are all about? Great pick-up, congrats!

I would say it's not freaky, but I would be lying. Love the sense of lighting.
