DescriptionThis is an unusual acquisition for me. Although most remember ZOT! fondly (as do I), I was always more of a fan of McCloud's Understanding Comics. Even today, I find that book completely fascinating; it contains so much and repays repeated reading. That having been said, I do like McCloud's artwork a lot. This is also the cover from the very first - and oversized at that - issue. This piece of artwork is from the Gary and Dawn Guzzo Collection (sadly, Gary is no longer with us).McCloud has a digital sequel of sorts to the book on his website. I may be old fashioned, but I much prefer physical artwork such as this. It cost somewhat more than what I had expected but it's a great as well as historic piece of artwork. Here is the auction house's description of the piece and series: 13x19" artboard has pen and ink/mixed media original art for front cover to Zot! #1, published by Eclipse Comics April 1984. Art is by Zot! creator Scott McCloud and features action-packed image of Zacchary T. Paleozog (aka Zot) in flight, dodging raygun blasts as he holds his trusty golden pistol. Jenny Weaver and her brother Butch dodge raygun blasts as Zot's loyal robotic butler Peabody provides backup cover fire. "Eclipse Comics" logo, "Zot!" title/logo and issue number are pasted stats. Zot! was intended as a lighter alternative to the rise of darker, grittier comics of the 1980s, with McCloud serving up readers science fiction superhero stories. Of the 36 issues, the first 10 were published in color. Despite critical acclaim, the title was initially canceled after 10 issues due to low sales. At this point, the decision was made to relaunch the title in black and white, allowing the comic to run profitably from Jan. 1987 until July 1991. Social/Sharing |

Many thanks, John. I totally agree. Although many look askance at nostalgia, it is a very real and meaningful part of our lives indeed.

This is a nicely executed cover from one of my favorite series and artist. The sense of motion makes this a classic.

Many thanks, Ilia. Scott knew how to do his art and that is also why, I guess, Understanding Comics is such a perceptive book.

Many thanks, EC. And if I haven't mentioned it before (and, in any event, I would be happy to mention it again), congrats on a great collection of original comic artwork!

Wow, I did NOT expect to see you post this! I'm keenly aware that you are a big fan of McCloud's Understanding Comics, but did not think that you had read this series. Either way, it's great to see that you DID acquire it as it was one of my favourite pieces in the auction. I think the art is brilliant and it brings up good memories from my favourite time in comics. A great piece of 1980's independent comics history. Kudos!

Many thanks, Rubén. I must confess that I took a while before deciding to try for it. As you have mentioned, the art is brilliant and that mostly swung it for me. It does also appear to have brought back good memories, judging by the tenor of some of the comments made.

Eclipse promoted the heck out of Zot! in their other titles! They were a high end indie with better paper and full color. So it was really great to see what McCloud did when applying all that Understanding of Comics to this title as he backs up the art with all those ideas and classifications.

Many thanks, Marcus. Yes, indeed, one can see many of the ideas being effected on this very cover itself!

I really liked McCloud's art which seemed to mix manga-styling with that clean C.C. Beck and Kurt Schaffenberger look. Cheers!

Many thanks, Timothy. That is a very interesting take on the piece which I must confess that I had not thought of before. It might explain that clean and simple (albeit not simplistic) feel to the entire piece.

Forget the first appearance of Aunt May's new airdo, THIS is historic (and a great piece of art in itself). Congrats.

LOL! Thank you so much. This was a truly seminal book in the indie comics scene way back when.
