Description

Dumbo "Lullaby Sequence" Original Storyboard Attributed to Joe Rinaldi by Heritage Auction House ; however it is my opinion that it is the work of Bob Youngquist. An animator also known to have worked on Fantasia and Sleeping Beauty. This original storyboard is from the enchanting "Lullaby Sequence" of Walt Disney's tale of an ample-eared flying pachyderm named Dumbo. The storyboard showcases the unique artistry and storytelling craft of the artist. Illustrated on 10" x 9.5" trimmed animation paper with graphite and color pencil, this work captures a tender moment between a mother zebra and her foal nestled in one of the circus train, Casey Jr., box cars. This is not to slight Rinaldi who as a highly gifted draughtsman and storyman made significant contributions to various Disney features, including Dumbo, Melody Time, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Babes in Toyland. His influence was so profound that Disney Legend Frank Thomas credited him with playing a crucial role in the greatness of Lady & the Tramp, particularly noting the significant impact of his drawings on the film's final look. Storyboards like this serve as essential tools in filmmaking, guiding everything from camera shots to character positioning. Featured in the 1996 "Under the Big Top" exhibit at the International Cartoon Museum in Boca Raton, Florida. Accompanied by a Disney Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Courvoisier Art Program when originally sold in the 40's. Published in unknown source first week of November 1941,pg.30. Article titled "DUMBO, Disney creates a flying elephant".

Such a great visual design with the zebra patterns combining in an emotional embrace of mother and child.
