Description

Some time ago, a Daily CAF update hit my inbox featuring Spidey and Venom mixing it up on a cool page by Kano. Unfortunately, by the time I clicked the link to Splash Page Art it had already been snatched up.

However, I have fond memories of Kano on Action Comics, so I spent some time perusing the other pages Mark Hay had available and came across this heartwarming page of the Thing at the end of a date.

The page was from Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four, a book I’d never heard of. But there was something about seeing ol’ Benji have this sweet moment that made me smile. So, I hopped onto my Marvel Unlimited app and read the issue by Kano and Zeb Wells.

I loved it. Wells’ script gave us an entire arc with an ending that packed an emotional wallop, which was made even more heartbreaking by Kano’s deft depiction.

One of the reasons the ending hit so hard is because the two did such a good job setting things up at the beginning. In quick order, the first few pages show us Ben’s feelings of alienation before he saves a young lady from a couple of thugs and she rewards him with her number. And Kano’s brilliant cartooning and facial expressions here let us see Ben genuinely happy. So, after reading the issue, I headed back to Splash Page Art and picked up this page… and many others from the issue.

As an aside, there’s something about a well-told, done-in-one story that really appeals to me. Maybe that’s because I grew up reading monthly comics before the made-for-trade mentality took over the industry. Either way, I’ve found that many of my favorite single-issue stories of the last fifteen years or so were written by Zeb Wells, such as “I was a Teenage Frog-man” from Spider-man’s Tangled Web #12 and his brilliant interaction between Spidey and Cap in Avenging Spider-man #5.

While comics generally are all about the big action sequences, it is the interpersonal moments such as the one deftly depicted on this page that hold a special place in my heart.

There's a reason you and I found our way to Tim and have been friends for so long.  ;o)

Can a man made of rock blush?

Yes but a man with a heart of stone cannot.

Under all that gruff and racky exterior, Benjamin J Grimm is a big softie!

Any depiction of the Thing wearing a necktie is one worth celebrating, and the interaction as depicted has a wonderfully subtle sense of movement even though there isn't a lot of "action" per sé.

Q: Is Jennifer a new riff on Alicia Masters?

Matt, definitely not a riff on Alicia once you read the story.
