DescriptionFaust: Love Of The Damned Act #3 Cover Portfolio PlateArt (Pencils, Inks, Zipatone) by Tim Vigil Signed by Tim Vigil and David Quinn 11" x 17" image area on larger sized board 1989 Happy home stretch to Halloween! To celebrate, I'm sharing my FAVORITE horror themed image in my art collection. Faust (AKA Faust: Love Of The Damned) written by David Quinn and illustrated by Tim Vigil, is one of the most influential independent comic runs from the horror/adult comics genres since it's creation in the late 80s (Northstar/Rebel Comics). If you know you know. If you don't, do some research or read it yourself if you can handle it, but make sure there aren't any children around when you do. This is adults only material, no question. Intense violence/gore, graphic sexual content, language, and innovative incorporation of music/song lyrics, are just a few bullet points of what made this "outlaw comic" so ahead of it's time, and subsequently influential on other indie comic creators ever since. Over the years I found many of the issues at the Koch Comics Warehouse in Sunset Park, Brooklyn - they are closing soon though, RIP :-/. Eventually I collected the entire original 15 issue run in single comic issue format, including alternate covers and multiple printings of certain issues. Act 3's main cover (featuring main characters John Jaspers and Jade DeCamp) had 3 different printings, which I eventually found them all, including a copy signed by both Quinn and Vigil. I also still have a sealed copy of the Volume 1 Cover Portfolio, from which this original art plate is from. After looking for an interior page art example from Vigil for awhile, ultimately I ended up with an opportunity to acquire this cover plate (cover portfolio plates were done in black and white by Vigil whereas the single issue comic covers were painted/colored), and it being one of my favorite key images from the original run, it was tough to pass up on for me. So I took the plunge and got it! In 2023 and 2024 a hardcover Omnibus and softcover collected edition of the run was published (Black Mask Comics), making it more accessible than ever to experience the modern indie/adult horror cult classic for modern audiences. I picked up the softcover to complete/finish my Faust collection and can now re-experience the story anytime without having to dig out individual comic issues to do so. Originally I had hoped to share even more horror/spooky/monster themed pieces during October, but life got in the way in multiple ways, so I had less time for posting than I originally anticipated. But I'm pretty happy with the pieces I was able to share, and had to wrap it up with this one! Check out my other October themed posts if you missed any from the last few weeks, and have a great Halloween fellow collectors! Social/Sharing |

Not sure how people regard Tim these days. But he sure got my attention in his prime. Not just because of the mostly mature subject matter, but the artwork was so compelling. This is a fantastic 80's example from this mostly unsung and somewhat forgotten artist. Wow!

I'd never heard of this book before, but that cover is gorgeous. Your description has me intrigued; I may track down a copy of the omnibus.

Glad someone learned about it's existence who didn't know about it before from my post! If you do ever get around to checking it out, let me know what you thought of it. It's definately subject material that will not work for everybody

Did not expect this to be in your collection! Story content and imagery aside, Vigil is/was a very talented artist and brought it to his work on Faust.

Thanks Mark!! Definately outside my "main" collecting categories, but it is a series I've read and collected in other ways like I mentioned in my description, had been looking for a piece to represent it in my collection for awhile and ended up with this one - pretty happy with it, most likely a one and done example but you never know

Outstanding! I love the way he did the girl's face in the shadow. I must confess that I find his art a bit over rendered for my taste but this one is perfect!

A Vigil Faust cover? How cool!
It's also nice how well it presents. Not too graphic to hang up!

Takeaways from Tim Vigil
You can't take back Faust you said, I know
I've had it all with gore, at least a million lines
I'm not one to reget, you know
I don't believe, I don't believe it
You left in peace, left me art pieces
Too hard to treat, It's Halloween
Right now, Im...
Zip's so slick with that damn old love, that shit, ink tears me up
Inks so slick on that damned art love, my Kavi's had enough
Oh-oh-oh (that devil love)
Oh-oh-oh (that satan love)
I'm so sick of that damn old love, feels like I've shown art
I'm so sick of that damn old love, the kind of plate for port
-fo-li-o (that demon love)
Fo-li-o (that satan love)

Faust was like nothing else and it's cool to see it finally collected. This is an exceptional example from the series, congrats.

Quite the controversial comic at the time and not for the faint of heart ,but a very intriging horror story to say the least !

Hell yes, this is so incredible. I'd die to have a piece from this original run and a cover is absolutely insane. Tim's inks were on an entirely other level for this series and still blow away so many of the black & white books of the time. Appreciate you sharing this, it's gorgeous!

You are in a pretty exclusive club if you have ANY published Tim Vigil art in your collection, but to have one as nice as this is truly exceptional.
