DescriptionI'm not sure what more can be said about the artistry of Hal Foster's Prince Valiant. The strip began in February of 1937 and thus started an epic adventure that spans some 4,500 Sunday strips and continues to this day. From 1937 until 1971 (when Foster did his last strip), the strip took up an entire page of the Sunday comics. The strip ran only on Sundays, and told an epic tale of knights and amazing battles. After a number of transition artists, John Cullen Murphy took over art duties until 2004, and was then replaced by Gary Gianni and subsequently Thomas Yeates. The strip runs to this day and is larger than most Sundays. Foster's details and flowing inks set a standard for art that was often imitated, but never duplicated. Art classes have used Foster's work to show what excellence in art truly means. This strip (from 1947) follows Val and his new bride, Aleta, as they go out on a bear hunt. Click on the scan and enjoy the detail, especially in the last panel. Social/Sharing |

Breathtaking Ron....and you're correct, what more can be said about this artistic genius. The detail is incredible in every panel. I'll never tire at looking at these, and this is one of the best ever. The biggest of congratulations on this acquisition!

The last four panels with those trees are nothing short of exquisite. Each one could be framed as a singular masterpiece.

This is a masterpiece! Hal Foster’s meticulous detail and sweeping compositions are on full display here, capturing the grandeur and adventure that made the strip legendary. The contrast between the lighthearted skiing mishap and the intense, silent beauty of the winter hunt showcases Foster’s ability to balance humor, drama, and breathtaking visuals within a single page. The final panel, teasing the next week’s installment with Aleta’s tense encounter, is a perfect cliffhanger.
Foster’s work is truly in a league of its own. His ability to tell an epic tale with painterly precision and dynamic storytelling set a standard that remains unmatched. A spectacular piece of comic history! Kudos, Ron!

Lovely PV example!I have always preffered these outdoors examples, hunting or fighting in the forest. In this amazing page, as a bonus we have a classic gag with Aleta. Mister Forster at his prime. Bravo!

Foster really put his artistic prowness on full display with the trees and forest in winter. Foster's writing and storytelling are well done and paced on this page too.

My own example is from just a few months later and I love it dearly, but honestly, Foster was pretty great every single year of the strip. As others have mentioned, the contrast of the humor in Aleta's ski accident and the hushed menace of the bear lurking in the thicket is really top notch and shows how it was not just the art, but also the writing and pacing that made this strip such a classic of the form. Hope I will have the chance to see it in person some day.

Fantastic Prince Valiant strip! Hal Foster was an amazing draftsman and drew strips of exceeding beauty! I love his work in the 1940's especially as he had refined his techique by then and was drawing these enormous Sunday pages of exceeding quality. I love the detail Foster put in every panel. Here, the panels in the deep woods are especially beautiful, with the snow piled high on the tree branches. As you note, that final panel is exceptionally exquisite, with Aleta resting amidst the branches and the dog noticing the black bear coming through the trees. Boy, they don't draw Sunday funnies like these any more! Great pick-up, congrats!
