DescriptionThis is the Spider-Man strip (c & trademark Marvel Comics Group) that appeared nationally on June 17 of 1980. John Romita penciled and inked it primarily with a brush (the buildings were done w a crowquill pen) and finished using white out for lighting effects and the speed lines.John Romita was my direct boss (I was one of the first generation of Romita's Raiders in the Marvel bullpen) and he gave this to me in the early 80s. It is signed in pen "Best wishes to Phil - John Romita" because my middle name is Phil and that is what my friends primarily call me . . . I always considered him the quintessential Spider-Man artist. The last time I spoke with him (about a year before he passed) I reminded him of the introductory panel when Peter Parker first met Mary Jane Watson and Stan Lee penned the famous line, "Face it, Tiger... you just hit the jackpot!" I told him that that panel made more of an impact on me than any of the many 'action' scenes he drew. While Stan Lee's words increased the impact, Mary Jane was my childhood crush after his rendering of her! John told me, "You know, Phil. I ruined that panel." I said, "What?!?" "When I penciled that, Mary Jane was gorgeous! When I inked it, it just wasn't as good." I almost stuttered, reiterating how this one panel had so singularly impacted me. This conversation sums up the primary reason John Romita was such a great human being. He was so genuinely humble. I never heard him brag about his work, no matter how phenomenal it was, but he was the head of the Marvel Art Department for good reason. And if you wanted advice or needed assistance on any aspect of drawing, he would graciously give you his time and kindly, but honestly, let you know where you needed to improve. One amazing man!
