DescriptionThis piece was commissioned back in August at the first Eddie P Comic Con in West Mifflin, PA. It was a memorable and emotional weekend, and one of the highlights from the con was getting to take a good look at Thomas Hale Reynolds' sketch book. I remember Big Phill yelling from a distance, “You have to see this guys sketchbook!” He wasn't wrong, because we were all immediately drawn to his art style. Thanks to him too or this commission doesn't happen. In regards to concept, character design, and execution, this brings a smile to my face. The Mutant Mantid that you see here is an original design from Thomas and one that caught my eye in the sketchbook. I'm getting a hint of death's head moth in the face there. It puts the lotion in the basket. The commission idea eventually evolved into Spider-Man fighting one of them. I love horror and Spidey and the moment I say that, Bernie Wrightson's epic, “Hooky” immediately springs to mind. Well, this piece is the long awaited indie symbiote sequel! Thomas also nailed the composition here. The Mutant Mantid is coming upwards from the bottom of the page (he even breaks the panel) to snap that power line with his long barbed arm. Spidey is coming straight down and has found a nice flat surface with that left foot as he connects with a web punch. All of this action is centered nicely as the snapping line and broken pole show how much damage this puppy can do. Lastly, I think that the use of the gray copic markers really added some great depth to the piece and to Spidey's overall detail. The end result is a fun and unique one! Want to send the sincerest thanks in the world to Thomas Hale Reynolds aka Tommygun the Preacher's Son! Appreciate the time and effort that you put into this! It makes for such an original commission and a perfect example of why I love this hobby. 2024 out! Happy New Year to everyone! 11”x14” Social/Sharing |

"It does this whenever its told" :)
Sweet end of the year add, mashing up 2 of your pop culture faves in horror and Spidey! An overall nice composition, and this dude Mantid looks like a scary legit threat. And yes...them grey tones look great, particularly on that all black costume. Congrats, my friend, and happy new year!

Tommygun is a prize fighter! But Spider-Man Balboa is a streetfighter this street fight against the Mutant Mantids of Monessen can happen only in America! - George Washington Duke

pretty cool piece! I like that villain design and he did a great job with the Black Suit Spidey. Horror and Spidey combining is indeed an awesome thing. Happy New Year Tyler!
