Description

Keeping 2021 rolling with first pieces by artists and am glad to now being adding the great Gene Colan to the roster! A recent ComicLink win I was all over when I saw it posted.

I’ve wanted to pick up a Colan piece, but wanted that right one from his Marvel Comics Presents run featuring Black Panther and/or a Tomb of Dracula page featuring Blade. Definitely hit the latter in a great way with this…and yes am still looking for the former :)

Tomb of Dracula was before my time and I never read the entire run. But, I do like Blade a lot as a character, and knowing Colan worked on his first stories, a page featuring the original vampire slayer was a pretty easy bronze target for me. I know Blade from his modern look and stories (AND the great first film) but I always thought it was cool that the character had 2 very distinct looks – one the classic ‘70s and the other the contemporary. Both equally awesome. Got a nice Siqueira cover featuring the current look - https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1486367 - and now a nice OG example with this! Having a page with Dracula definitely would’ve been cool, but it was all about “Colan” and “Blade” in terms of what I wanted.

On to the art. Great top half splash here! Nice depth exhibited, and you can clearly tell this is Colan with those fluid (no pun intended!) lines on a swimmin’ Blade, and his comrade flanking. Those lines are no doubt enhanced by equally great inker Tom Palmer. Also…I loved all the zipatone in the background :) Neat monologue, too…Blade having a more vulnerable moment. Though we all know he’s got LOTS more slaying to do! I thought the transition to the 2nd panel was cool as well, with the perspective there being from Blade’s eyes through his goggles. Lastly, I liked the last 2 lines of dialogue – “Dig?” “Dig!” :) Y’all may notice I use the word fairly often when describing art I like :)

So yes, definitely glad to check off Genial Gentleman Gene the Dean off the list with this add. Thanks, as always, for looking!

Great explanation. Never considered that Blade was in this series.  Maybe you will find a dracula piece to add to the collection at a later date.  Congrats!

I love the triangular composition of this beautifully designed page. I'm also impressed and excited to see that Blade is drawn more accurately than Colan typically drawn anatomy, which is often kind of wonky but which he gets away with because of his amazing ability to paint with his pencil. Gotta say though, I LOVE the 1st person POV in the 2nd panel best of all, putting the reader right in the middle of the tense action. I can see why you're gettin' diggy wit it, Kahlil!

Good point regarding the anatomy, and I've never heard that "paint with a pencil" descriptor for Colan before...APT!  Totally made sense when I read it as a number of Colan images popped in my head. And the 2nd POV panel...it was a big draw. First was the splash up top, then panel 2, then panel 3 - all 3 had something to offer...thus completing the "triangle" :) Always dig your comments, Rube - insightful! Thanks, man, and all, for your adds!

Great first panel, but that second panel is the winner in my book.  So cool!  And really, Blade, what would you do if you weren't slaying vampires?  Open a Subway restaurant?  Become a court reporter? Teach high school math?  I don't think so.  Just keep doing what you're doing, cuz we totally dig that.  :)

For real! He did specify his heart may not be in VAMPIRE killing anymore. Perhaps he was going to move on to werewolves. Or some other thing that goes bump in the night. Maybe his bud Musenda here talked some sense into him, though - "Blade. You know you're the best at killin' bloodsuckers. And you know you enjoy it. Ups, downs, gonna happen. But you gotta continue to do YOU, man. We need you out here. Dig?" "Dig." :) Thanks, Paul!

"I'm not sure if I'm still dedicated enough after Frost died!" Says the vampire hunter swimming through the stormy ocean with a knife in his teeth, scoping out a vampire's lighthouse. Yeah, I'm not buying it, Blade. Dig? Dig! That first panel is more zipatone than pencil or ink, and I love it. And that second panel is killer. A beauty ToD page from the dean and Palmer here. Nice work taking it down. Congrats!

Ha ha, good callout! No more slaying, eh, Blade? RIIIIIGHT :) It's funny. The top panel is indeed more zipatone than art. And it's weird in a way to think anyone would like it that way. But I'm right there with you. Really frames the characters, making them POP. Gives a 3D effect, too. Glad you diggin' this page, J!

Pretty lame to say, “You’re really on a roll!”, isn’t it?  Looking at the last few months of acquisitions in your new gallery layout (or, y’know, your whole collection :) ) it is one wonderful “gasp-worthy” piece after another... and now you add Gene Colan to the mix?  Well played, sir!  Boom!

One of the characters I link in my head to Gene Colan is Namor, and that first panel tickles that “equation” nicely, while still being completely separate, of course...  And Tom Palmer is one of the all-time greats, making each page he works on “complete”, as with the zipatone in the first panel, the ocean waves in panel 2, and the sky in the top right corner of panel 3, balancing out the word balloon and counter-pointing the black “masking” in panel 2 so very, very well.  A really lovely finished, balanced page, thanks to Palmer, but that first panel is all Colan, baby!  Mega-congrats, pal!

Hey...if I'm on a roll then I'm on a roll.  Call it like you see it, Jason ;)  That's funny about Namor...you do get a hint of Subby in this one, huh?  Diggin' the points about how balanced the page is.  I looked again after reading your comments...could not agree more.  Thanks, man!

Absolutely beautiful.  First time I notice it, and I'm going to have to look more at other examples but I see similarities in the faces to Paul Gulacy's work - wonder if Paul was inspired by Gene?  Maybe someone more in touch with some of that info may already know.

I'm not as familiar with Gulacy's work but looked at some pieces on CAF after reading your comment and can see some of what you're saying. As you note, though, we'll leave it to those more in-the-know. Thanks for the add, Byron!

Great example from this super art team, especially with Blade "armed to the teeth" (HaHa) - with a sharp "blade" (another HaHa..). I'm no regular zipatone-fan but in this deep-sea case it really ads a graphic plus. Now go for many other Colan Drac pages with or without the infamous Vampire Hunter :)

And Blade's a helluva swimmner, too! See here how he's "cutting through that water like a knife" ;) Thanks for the add, Tommy! It's funny, the more I look at this one, the more I want a Blade vs. Drac page - we shall see! For now, I'm happy with this, and gotta keep that in mind! We know how much of the fun in this hobby is the "hunt" (ha ha, there's another!), i.e., "OK, I got this piece...NOW what's next?!" LOL. Gotta make sure to appreciate the new pick ups!

Much appreciated, Hal, and I also really appreciate the comments you posted here as well as on a number of my other pieces today.  Really glad you like what you see, AND dig the descriptions.  I like to lay out what it is that I like about a piece, for both myself, as well as fellow collectors who care to read 'em.  Thanks, again!

Use of zip adds to the classic ambiance of this TOD Blade appearance. Gene Colan was an artistic wizard and Tom Palmer no slouch either. You're always coming up with the good stuff my friend.
