DescriptionHarlan's team encounters strangers in the Transylvanian forest: “Harlan, there are people ahead.” “I see them too.” (In Romanian) “Who goes there?” “Hey! We’re tourists! And who are you? Forest rangers?” “Something like that. Strange tourists, marching through a forest in the dark.” “We like to look at the stars.” “You had your flashlights off too. And if you are forest rangers, where are your uniforms?” “There are no official rangers in this forest. Just us. We are part of the environmentalist garrison of Briete.” “Hmm... I've heard about that. You've worked hard to sink the Dracula Park project.” “And it worked! The amusement park will not be built, not in our forest at least.” “But you're still here. Why?” “So many questions, for simple tourists. Don't trust them, Nina.” “Yeah, for all we know you could be journalists, or worse!” “You guys don’t appreciate journalists?” “They tend to make us look like nutjobs who prefer useless old trees to honest jobs.” “Of course, the ones who wrote that were paid by the park company and land speculators.” “Our ancient oaks are always in danger, so our garrison can't quit.” I have the impression that Europeans tend to hold reporters, or "journos," in lower esteem than Americans generally do. The flashlight beams on page 37 are made of negative space surrounded by dense cross-hatching. Nice effect. Having established the darkness on that page, the following page shows us all the figures clearly anyway, for clarity of narrative. Otherwise, realistically, the next dozen pages would all just be silhouettes talking. Social/Sharing |

In some countries, they put their journalists on the chopping block. These guys seem like comic relief side characters meant to throw us off. I like how the patterns are all hand done and no screentone at all in these pages.

As a lifelong American...gotta say I'm with the Europeans! Not in a "fake news" kind of way, but in a sense that most reporters are immediately given more credit than they likely deserve without a track record of any kind in a lot of cases. But I'll get off my soapbox now!
The inking on page 37 especially is so superb, that silhoutte panel with the flashlight is amazing...and that bottom panel were both groups encounter each other and the camera zooms out is great as well.
