DescriptionAfter the defeat of Vlatna, Draka provides some exposition: “Son…” “Father? I… At first I believed that you were behind these horrors.” “In a certain sense, that is correct, Harlan. I was the one who rebuilt Castle Vlatna and set up the vampire theme park.” “Then…?” “What attractions would be more credible than real undead, or realistic hallucinations produced by the mind of a Master? But since I could not always be here, I decided to use the power of my enemy Vlatna, punished by me, dismembered and buried in the basement of this castle. His psychic emanations would power an excellent vampire museum. In addition to my Szekelys and my undead, I had left here as an overseer my faithful Vlad, brought back to life with the help of a fragment of my person that he always kept on him.” “The medallion with your hair… Vlad is now dissolved.” “I will take away his remains. He has always been faithful to me. The same cannot be said of others…” (Vance) “Forgive me, Master. I was unable to resist Vlatna's mental influence.” “You lie, Vance. Before he was strengthened with fresh blood, Vlatna was at best capable of sending a telepathic message. You must have agreed to be his accomplice in this plan against me.” “How could Vance betray you? Isn't he one of your undead?” “No. My mistake was to let this worm live, rather than turning him into my slave. Mercy doesn't pay, sometimes… but that's quickly remedied!” (Vance's throat is cut.) “Aawghh!” (Harlan) “Noo!” “Don't shed any tears, Harlan. Without him, none of this would have happened. I thought I scared him to death, but Vance had more guts than the average human. He had grown to hate me so much that he allied himself with Vlatna. They opened 'Dracula Park' one night early, knowing I was far away. Vlatna was on the verge of returning to what he once was.” “But… why all this? And why didn't you kill Vlatna once and for all, four years ago?” “Did you not know, my son? Only a Dampyr can definitively kill a Master of the Night. Through you, I have a power no other of my kin possesses.” The short version is that Draka didn't want this theme park built in a nature preserve, so he arranged instead for the ruined castle to be rebuilt as Dracula Park, powered by the attenuated remains of his defeated enemy Vlatna. Draka also made a simulacrum of Vlad Dracula to preside over the park. But when Vance conspired to help Vlatna regenerate, just as Harlan arrived on the scene, Draka was all too happy to get his son to kill Vlatna for him. It worked, too. This is not the only issue of Dampyr in which Harlan becomes a pawn manipulated by one Master of the Night against another. Message: We are all just dupes in the hands of great powers. This story says outright that Harlan's Dampyr blood uniquely qualifies him to kill Masters of Night. Later Draka will clarify that Masters of Night can kill each other, but they consider it rude to do so directly. This opens space for our heroes to participate in many stories. Meanwhile, at least a couple of innocents died to power Vlatna's failed regeneration scheme. Essentially Draka is playing the role of Hammond (the Richard Attenborough character) in the original "Jurassic Park" book and film, filling a theme park with monsters without ensuring adequate safety measures to protect his guests. Bye, bye, Vance
In a hypnotic trance
Say hello to Draka
Today you’re gonna die
Bye, bye, Vance
In a hypnotic trance
Say hello to Draka
Yes, you’re gonna die
Bye, bye, Vance, goodbye

A story filled with horrors, twists, and turns seemingly resolves with a father and son moment! I like your parallel between what happened here and Jurassic Park. Thanks for sharing these 175 pages (unless there's more to come?), enjoyed experiencing the story through the great artwork and your handy translations and descriptions!

Thanks! Glad you have enjoyed the journey as an introduction to these characters.
There is.a little more before we move on to another tale.

Vance thrown under the bus will be a recurring theme in the days ahead. These closeups at spots around these pages are very metal gothy!
