DescriptionHere's a trio of anatomical studies by Jeff from a course I took years ago. Jeff would reinterpret the instructive but scratchy drawings in Bridgeman's classic Constructive Anatomy text, retaining all the structural information but finishing the drawing in his more naturalistic and pleasing style. The foot here has many Bridgemanisms, such as the stacked building blocks making up the big toe. The legs were probably done from photos of female body builders, with all the muscle insertions and origins visible due to the complete lack of body fat.Generations of outstanding artists have studied the approach to figure drawing pioneered by Frank Reilly at the Art Students League in the early 20th Century. Jeff Watts carries on this tradition, and he has produced my favorite life drawings of all time. Jeff is a great friend who has taught hundreds (thousands?) of artists in all aspects of traditional drawing and painting at his Atelier in the San Diego area, and he and his fellow instructors have generated an enormous trove of virtual course material. So if you want to improve your drawing and painting skills, check out his online courses and/or make a pilgrimage to his Atelier. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

Very nice indeed. Personally, when you're in the habit of taking life drawing classes, I've always found it pointless to draw from books. But it's clear that here he was taking Bridgeman's more stylized drawings and making them appear more natural looking.

When I was in the groove back when I was in Watts Attelier full time, I'd draw from life including heads, full figures, drapery/costume, long drawings, quick sketches, etc., but I'd also do studies of individual features (eyes, noses, mouthes, etc.) from Vanderpoel's book and other references, anatomy studies from Bridgeman, Loomis, photo reference, etc., and I'd do charcoal studies of paintings by great artists (Frazetta, Leyendecker, Sargent, Rockwell, etc. etc.). Drawing is hard, so my best bet is to attack from every angle

I suppose that's not a bad thing, since you were doing so much!
