DescriptionFirst off, I wish to thank "Johnny C." for selling me this cover. He is an awesome person to deal with and is truly one of the best.“Childhood Tragedies” from February 17, 1935, by Percy Crosby the creator of Skippy. Crosby created two series of covers for the “American Weekly Magazine” supplement. The first one appeared in late 1933 called “City Shadows” and the second one “Childhood Tragedies” in early 1935. Both series were rather depressing but given the times being in the middle of the “Great Depression” it’s understandable. I have only seen original artwork for three of them so far, all three were from the “Childhood Tragedies” series. Two of these appeared in Heritage Auctions and both were labeled wrong saying they were from “Life” magazine. If anyone has the tear sheets in color for these two series, please let me know. Please contact if you have any original artwork for any of these covers as well. Social/Sharing |

I like that we get to see the colors here and how it's translated into tones for the b&w the publication. Something unique just for thos looking at the original.

Thanks for your comment, but the actual cover that was used in the newspapers was in color. I had to use the b&w because that is the only one I could find. Hopefully sometime in the future I can find the actual color tear sheet.

That's wou;d be cool to see with the stained glass colors and the bright red carpet. I guess this depression era piece is to show us this scamp wearing his father's clothes is seeing how the other half lives.
