DescriptionHere's a tracing done by Andrew Burward-Hoy over a life drawing I was pecking as he showed me how to fix and improve various aspects of my effort during a life drawing class in Los Angeles back in the late 90s. I love how each of his lines has a definite character, and his shapes are bold and clear, yet all the marks on the page are subtle, with lots of variation. The drawing is highly structured with a minimum of visible construction lines other than places where he wanted to emphasise a point for my benefit.Andrew was a precocious art student in Fred Fixler's art school back in the day; he achieved an extraordinary level of skill as a young art student. By the time I met him when this tracing was done, his craft was ridiculously good. Some of my fellow art students at Watts Atelier and I went to take a class with Andrew one weekend, and I marveled as he cranked out a gorgeous demonstration drawing from life in about 20 minutes using what looked like a charcoal briquette rather than a properly sharpened Ritmo pencil; in fact, he started in the upper left of the 18"x24" newsprint, and then worked his way down and to the right finishing in the bottom right corner, with no real preparation or structural lines to guide his work. It was more of a magic show than useful instruction for most of the students I think, but it was insprirational for the advanced students. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

It's always a wonder when you witness someone conceptualize an entire drawing in their head and then translate it on paper. Magic show indeed!

Not nearly as skillful as Jeffrey Watts' figure drawings, but nice nonetheless.

Perhps this is a bad example, but it represents <5 minutes of instructional mark making as he explained things to me. His skills were (and I think still are, but haven't seen him in a while) off the charts. I'll post another painting demo he cranked out to make my case. Thanks, as alwyas, for weighing in!

Oh, I didn't say it was bad. I said it was nice. Just not on the same level as Watts' charcoal life drawings. I absolutely love looking at high quality pieces from life drawing classes, so it's been fun seeing all these pieces you've been posting lately.

Thanks for all your comments on these life drawings I've been posting, Ruben! Bill's been very supportive of CAF members showing off their non-comic OA on the site, and I've been taking advantage of it. Without life drawing and high end art instruction, we wouldn't have so many great comic artists...
