DescriptionAs Catgirl makes the newspaper, prompting a conversation between her alter ego Barbara and her father James Gordon, Batman struggles with his parents death. This page is from a 1980 dated unpublished inventory story that re-imagines Batman's origin, one where following the murder of his parents Bruce Wayne is raised by James Gordon. Signed by Novick in Panels 2 and 5. Auctioned by Heritage from the Irv Novick Family Collection, with all art aspects attributed to him.In my youth we'd spend anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks each summer visiting all of the grandparents and family in Kentucky. My uncle Steve is 7 years older than I am and frequently had a stack of DC comics on hand that I'd pour through. Especially the Batman titles, as I wasn't a regular DC reader. So even though this story was unpublished this period Batman art hits right in my nostalgia window at a price that doesn't punch my wallet. Social/Sharing |

Brilliant choice to silhoutte Gordon in those two panels. For me it just makes the page that much more visually interesting.

This is a fun page with such a unique twist on Batman’s origin, offering an intriguing alternative dynamic that adds a fresh layer of depth to the classic story. The emotional weight of the scene, with Bruce struggling with his parents' death while Barbara and her dad share a quieter, more personal moment, is really felt through the art.
Your nostalgic connection to this era of Batman is felt by many collectors. There’s something special about revisiting these moments from your youth, especially when it aligns with a story like this that might have never seen the light of day, and even more so when it comes at a price that hits right in the sweet spot! Kudos, Jeff!

I've now been going back through the Heritage finished auctions and pulling their scans of other pages from this story. So far, I've found pages 4 through 17. Hopefully they post the rest, as I'd like to be able to read the full issue. It is an interesting take on the character.

Who's Catgirl?
Who's Catgirl?
When you see her, say Barbara
And kiss your art goodbye
She's trouble, in a word pull Gotham from the fire
Newspaper, for Martha burns Bruce up inside
You're sitting 'round and 'round
You can't get out, you cry but you Bat
¿Quién es gata niña? (Who's Catgirl?)
Señorita, massafera (Who's Catgirl?)
¿Quién es gata niña? (Who's Catgirl?)
Señorita, más fina (Who's Catgirl?)
You try to avoid her, fate is bid again
She's smiling, for publication there's no chance
Her art is on the street, tu corazón es Irv's though
Now you're calling Kentucky
You try to get away but you can't
¿Quién es gata niña? (Who's Catgirl?)
Señorita, massafera (Who's Catgirl?)
¿Quién es gata niña? (Who's Catgirl?)
Señorita, más fina (Who's Catgirl?)

interesting history to the page and your personal family connection to Batman/DC books of the era. I wonder how many times DC has explored alternate origins for Bruce/Batman after his parents' death that did not get published versus did (plenty of both I'd imagine)!
