Freeze’s stealthy approach adds a layer of suspense, and Newton's use of strong shadows to emphasize his presence in the darkness of the third panel is gorgeous. The final panel showing Argon reaching through the barred door, calling out to Freeze is a striking cliffhanger, especially because of the incredible forced perspective of that shot, which is incredibly difficult to get right even for long time pro artists, much less a young artist only about to go pro!
This is why I love looking at the new art postings on CAF, to discover new work. I know Newton and have always loved his DC work, but I didn't know of this early work. This is amazing and so mature. It has great storytelling and now I will no doubt deep dive into this work. Thanks for posting this.
