I am a big fan of the Mignolaverse as a whole, and a number of years ago those books really pulled me back into comics. I love the entire B.P.R.D. run along with the classic Mignola stories, but I especially love the stories from Richard Corben. The Crooked Man is my all time favorite, mostly due to the story taking place in Appalachia. However, Hellboy In Mexico is arguably as good if not better. The concept of Hellboy in a Lucha Libre setting battling the Mayan bat god, Camazotz and the undead is a fantastic one.

I knew right away that this would be a perfect subject for Cayetano because his comic book label, Black Rabbit Comics publishes a book by the very same name. When I got to IC3 I had not seen the finished commission and it was such a great surprise to see the reveal. Safe to say he killed it! Not only did he go above and beyond with the commission, but he was another artist that I was so glad that I had the opportunity to meet. Do you see the recurring theme here? Every artist I met this past weekend was absolutely wonderful and I look forward to seeing and talking to all of them again at future conventions. When it comes to this hobby, I love the art, but the personal experience aspect is just as important to me.

Now on to the piece, first of all he nailed the character design for Camazotz! It's full on horror and you know I love it! Next is the textures and detail on that wall above. Cayetano was telling us that he used copics and ink wash there. You couple that with the detailed cracks and bat design, and it looks like something straight out of a Hellboy story. It works so well when you step back and look at the whole thing. I thought that he took a unique approach with the character design of Hellboy. The character almost takes a more human like appearance. Tommy likey. Lastly, throw in some wonderfully drawn undead with signature skulls in the lower corner and you have a cover quality composition.

The end result would bring a smile to Mike Mignola's face. Wait, I can't speak for Mike Mignola, but it definitely brought a big smile to mine.

I'm in full agreement, it was a lot of fun getting to chat Cayetano up at the show. I'm looking forward to getting the piece I had to wait to buy from him, but I also see a commission from him in my future.

Congratulations! Thats a very nice commission. You probably already know, but theres a great b&w collection of all of Corbens Hellboy work that Delirium recently put out. Its even larger than the one DH put out in colour.
