DescriptionFrankenstein Alive, Alive! #3 Pg. 1 SplashLayouts/Prelim Artwork Pencils by Bernie Wrightson Co-Written by Steve Niles & Bernie Wrightson Keeping the October theme going with more Frankenstein's monster art, this time by the master Bernie Wrightson. A haunting splash scene of Frankenstein's monster, terror depicted on his face with the dead being unearthed around him. "Still, I Am Afraid." Frankenstein Alive, Alive! was a 4 issue miniseries released by IDW over the course of a 6 year period (2012 - 2018). A culmination of Bernie's work in the Frankenstein universe. The first two issues released in 2012, issue 3 released in 2014, and issue 4 released in 2018. It was co-written by Bernie Wrightson and Steve Niles, and illustrated by Bernie Wrightson, with Kelly Jones having been brought in to help Bernie finish issue 4 as his health was declining towards the end - Bernie passing shortly after the final issue was released. So this issue 3 was the final one he completed in it's entirety. I'm not entirely sure if he inked over blue line copies of the pencil layouts he did or if he re-did the pencils on the inked pages. I've seen "finished" pages pop up on CAF from issue 3, so perhaps the finished version of this page 1 splash page is out there somewhere or still with the family, but it's also possible that these are the published pencils, I honestly don't know - so I've just marked them as prelims for the purposes of designating an art type on CAF. That said, it's done on a large full sized layout paper board (image area is 11" x 17" and the board is slightly larger), and the pencils match pretty closely to the final published image (in additional images area). I'll likely never own something highly detailed like a Wrightson Frankenstein plate, but even for a rougher/looser prelim layout you can see the reverence he had for this material and subject matter. Really glad to own something related to his work on Frankenstein. P.S. - I read this mini again early this year, shortly after my accident/surgeries in the earlier portion of my recovery back in February. With all the metal parts I had installed and unable to walk at the time, I was feeling a bit like a Frankenstein's monster myself, and was in a bit of a dark place mentally. This readthrough affected me on a personal level at the time, so not only do I connect with the art, but also the story and themes within. Social/Sharing |

Kavi I'm afraid at the way you love this Wrightson line
Maybe I'm afraid of the page who loves you
Maybe I'm afraid at the way you pulled me out with Niles
You hung me on Alive
Maybe I'm afraid at the page I really read through
Maybe I'm a fan
Maybe I'm a Bernie fan who's in the middle of Swamp Thing
Kavi doesn't really give a damn
Maybe I'm a fan
And maybe you're the Kelly Jones fan who could ever help me
Kavi, won't you help me to monster mash?

Fantastic Wrightson art, the expression is amazing and so cool to see all the initial line work and what it ultimately becomes. A beautiful piece of the process.

As prelims go, this is pretty close to the finished image. Great to see how Wrightson worked out all the particulars here. Composition, placement, posing, and perspective. The scene is wonderfully designed for maximum content and visual impact. Not to mention the fabulous signature Wrightson linework. Congrats on this amazing example by one of comics all time greats.

For a prelim/layout, the confidence and boldness of Wrightson's line is still here. Wonderful example.

Cleary identified as pure Wrightson even at this early stage (the character's expression) so it's a true win, congrats.

The way Bernie worked always makes it difficult to know if your pencils are the final finished ones. I've seen a few pieces wherein there were up to four different pencilled pieces, all at various states of finish, but with two of them so close to one another that it's difficult to see the difference in level of finish. Either way, you got yourself a beautiful page which is quintessential Wrightson! On a different note, I'm glad you mentioned the publishing history of this title because I had been under the impression that it was an ongoing book and I never knew that only 4 issues had been published, much less that it took 6 years to get them all out!

Kavi, this is superb. You gotta keep in mind, pal, that -nothing- will ever come close to containing the details in those Frankenstein portfolio plates -except for- those portfolio plates, and there aren't that many of those around... :) The details here are -fantastic-!! Look at the shading, the hands, the torn shirt and clothing textures/tears on the ghoul in the bottom left... and then the expression on the face of the stalked victim here? Pure Wrightson excellence. Fantastic pencil piece by the Master - an absolute treasure. I love this thing! Congrats, Kavi!

Nice! Way to hit that Wrightson target, man...can't beat the subject. And so clear it's him when looking at it. BIG congrats!

I know the guy who owns the finished piece to this but I have to say, these pencils are superior. Love the depth and emotion. Congrats!

Fantastic. What a great pickup!
I compared the published page to the image of the art in Photoshop layers, and it's really close. Maybe he used a lightbox for the finished piece? I will send you the images.
