For me personally, at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. The stories that these artists tell. Aaron Campbell has become one of my favorite modern “storytellers.” His work on this book will definitely achieve that cult status eventually. I do think this could be the most underrated book out right now- harkening back to the Vertigo days, the intricate style, mood, unsettling tone, eerie art and lyrical soci-political writing.

Having moved to the southwestern US, the desert aesthetic has since grown on me. So it was hard to pass up a cactus Swamp Thing. And it may actually be the first time he’s taken his form from peyote, which I learned is a type of cacti.

I really appreciate the mirroring of the top panels with the bottom ones. In typical Constantine fashion, eagerly trying to instigate Swamp Thing at the top, then his look of displeasure as Swamp thing begins to dissolve back into the green at the bottom.

The large middle panel has Swamp Thing searching the green for answers. Showing past tragedies that molded current times. Which epitomizes Swamp Thing, Constantine, the US, and unfortunately ultimately humanity’s story.

You can feel the thorns and thick dry brush poking and cutting in each panel!
