DescriptionThrilled to pick up a page from William Messner-Loebs’ Journey series, a fanciful look at life in and around Michigan’s Fort Miami settlement in the 19th century. This page depicts one of the series leads, Joshua “Wolverine” MacAlistaire. It’s fair to say I prefer this “Wolverine” over others! 😂Journey, Love and Rockets, Nexus and other indie books of this era were central in my discovery of work outside the typical superhero fare and Journey also kindled a love for early American history that, indirectly, lead me to the field of study I pursued in academia. Really nice splash. This is one of those titles from the 1980s independent comics boom that needs to be exposed to a wider modern audience.

Spectacular page from this amazing series! Interesting to hear how much it affected your comic book tastes and broader interests. This was my favorite (well, maybe tied with Cerebus) of all the indipendent books coming out in the 80's, and I'm surprised it doesn't show up more on CAF and in current discussions. It's due for a resurgence in interest!

I love Journey also, love the ingrained Eisner. Don't forget Concrete from this period.

Can't forget Concrete. I wish there were more great pages from that series available.
I actually encountered Messner-Loebs' work before Eisner and remember thinking "Why does this art look like WML?" the first time I ever read anything by him.
