Description12 x 16 piece by Mitch O’Connell executed as a promo piece for the 1986 Comico graphic novel that Mike Baron (Nexus) wrote and O’Connell drew. The graphic novel was followed in 1988 by a Ginger Fox miniseries written by Baron and drawn by the Pander Bros.I thought I had closed off the OA money faucet for 2023 until I came across a Discord post by CAF’s Chuck Arnold regarding Mitch O’Connell’s 25% off holiday sale (Thanks, Chuck!). Mitch has a decades-long history as a “pop” artist, with a wide-ranging list of subjects drawn from 20th and 21st century pop culture and a list of clients across print and other media. I first encountered Mitch’s art on comics covers from the 1980s that were vivid, energetic, and completely unlike any other artist at the time. In particular, I fondly remember his Bette Page cover from Amazing Heroes #164 (see additional image). However, Mitch’s sequential work in comics was few and far between and the only thing I ever remember him doing was his collaboration with Mike Baron on the World of Ginger Fox graphic novel. The graphic novel was nothing to write home about and probably on par with Baron’s work on Sonic Disruptors. In other words, it wasn’t Baron’s strongest work as a writer even though O’Connell gave it his all, as you can see from the sprinkling of pages on CAF. This piece looks to be a first pass at the cover to the eventual collection of Ginger Fox, which O’Connell painted (see attached image). I prefer this version, mainly because it’s executed with pen and ink, but also because the painted cover used on the collection is a little too slick for my tastes. Check out the synopsis for The World of Ginger Fox below. Copies of the collection aren’t exactly scarce and can be easily found on eBay. Peppertree Studios used to be one of the biggest players in Hollywood, until the somber 1970s saw ill-conceived, big, worthy movies almost bankrupt the company. Now the dissolute boys-club of greedy old men who own the company are so desperate that they hire a woman to save or kill the studio. After all, they have nothing to lose... Amidst a welter of rumour, innuendo and open hostility, Ginger Fox blows into town and into a storm of trouble as she drags the company kicking and screaming back towards profits and safety. Along the way she encounters psychotic, crazed art-house directors, rowdy martial-arts prima donnas, drugs and thugs and sabotage from within by two-faced back-stabbers who don't like taking orders from a pretty young woman and especially not a single-mom, Hollywood outsider... Can't tell you how much I am gleefully enjoying your 1987 bonanza. It's the last year I was all-in, before taking a decade-long break from boy/adventure comics. Wonderful nostalgic pick-up.

It was a good year and, now that you mention it, a good time to have taken a break from comics.

It epitomizes the 80's look with a lot of it's graphic techniques and pin up influences that have clean lines and patterns for a more fast paced decade than the previous two.
