DescriptionAfter getting a page drawn by DWJ from this series about two parents (Sam & Duncan) trying to save their daughter Penny, how could i not also get a page by co-creator Riley Rossmo? The way the art duties are split in this series really make this a standout reading experience as events unfold in both the real world and Penny's dream world. A top target once I knew I wanted a page from Riley was a page with the standout dreamworld solider Brio, who is a representation of Penny's saftey plush in the real world, a stuffed Toad. Here in this page from issue 3 we see Brio leading Sam & Duncan to where Penny is being held. Love the action as it unfolds and flows as the trio jump from a helicopter and fly towards Penny's location, a fortified tower! While Riley has a fantastical style that lends itself so well to this setting, I also absolutely love his use of screentones. Love the look and texture it creates as you study the work up close. This series is nearing its 10 issue end soon, but I can honestly say it has been one that my appreciation for has only increased with each new issue. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this comic has come along at the exact right time as it truly is speaking to me as I am right there in that "parent of young children" phase of my life. It's sweet, tender, terrifying, heavy, scary, tender, heart wrenching & hopeful, all feelings & emotions found in parenthood. Social/Sharing |

oohh me likey that top panel of them falling from the sky out of the helicopter although I guess they do have winged jet packs so I guess technically they fly from there. Are DWJ and Riley alternating issues or are they both doing pages within each issue? congrats on adding an example from the other co-creator on a book you are loving.

Thanks Kavi! This was definitely one I zeroed in on before the Felix drop, that top panel being the key reason! With the art duties, it's actually really interesting on this book. There is a clear split with DWJ only drawing real world events & Riley drawing everything in the dream world. Most of the series is set in the dream world, DWJ has said his art accounts for about 20% of the series. With that said there are instances where they both end up working on the same board, sometimes appearing to work within the same panel (one sequence involved the parents entering the dream world from the real world). So having one complete page from each of the guys, naturally you can guess what my next want from this series might be! Haha

Congrats on this fantastic page! I resonate with your description and this series as a daddy of young kiddos too. The screen tones are fantastic and Riley really used every inch of that entire page.

Thanks Greg, while you don't need to be a parent to appreciate this series, being one though puts it all on another level! It was defineitly my top target for this issue, really wanted to get something with Brio front and center! I also like that, while I don't mind the blue pencils found on Riley's pages, I also like that this one is largely free of those. I do love seeing the process on a page, but sometimes it can take away from the impact of the finished work. Huge bonus that the screentones are found throughout on this one too!! Love what they bring to the appreciation of the art up close!

Brio is the star of the first part of the book! He's been through the wars of being Penny's childhood toy and comes out the other side of the war as a vet like Nick Fury!

He sure is & I knew I wanted something with him on there! A cute stuffed toad prince in the real world who in the dreamworld is not one you want to mess with at all!!

So glad to hear that your enjoyment and appreciation of the series continuesd to grow with every subsequent issue they release, Carl. That bodes well for them sticking the landing! If they do, you know who to recommend it to!

I'm really hoping they do stick the landing! There are elements throughout the series that continue to make it a top of the pile read each month. While I don't think its going to end up being everyone's favorite piece of DWJ work, it certainly feels like it's being written for guys like me, who like DWJ, is still in that earlier stage of parenthood. I hope its one i'll be able to whole heartedly reccommed to others when its all said and done!
