Description

Rich Buckler and Dick Giordano's cover to All-Star Squadron #1 is a personal favourite, and (in my view, anyway) one of the best of the Bronze Age -- but I realised last year that the "choosing/announcing a new team" cover has a heritage which goes back at least as far as Avengers #16, and arguably to All-Star Comics #8, so I started to wonder if there was an existing cover which could be reimagined as the cover of the first All-Star Squadron issue...

... and after reviewing several Avengers covers, and at least one JLA issue (Annual #2), I decided that Paul Ryan's cover to Avengers #329 might be a suitable candidate - and I thought that Peter Clinton would be a great artist to deliver it for me.

In case the heroes depicted in the background aren't familiar, they are:

Top row - Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Robotman
Second row - Johnny Quick, Wildfire (Quality Comics), Liberty Belle, Wildcat
Third Row - Shining Knight, Atom, Sandman, Uncle Sam
Bottom row - Blackhawk, Plastic Man

Dr Mid-Nid-Nite, of course, is the central figure.

I'm not sure how many more of these I'll do (I have three or four other covers I'm confident would work, and another handful that are possible candidates), but I do know that it won't be the last. Watch this space..

This cover design format is very good for a few large teams that have had roster turnovers through the years. It might also work for people who like the challenge of convention jams.
