DescriptionSan Diego 2010Doug Wildey worked in animation, comic books, and comic strips. My favorite Hanna Barbera production is his 1960's Jonny Quest cartoon. I watched the show with its great theme song on Saturday mornings in the 1960's and finally own them on DVD now. In the 1980's, Comico published Jonny Quest #1 with Doug drawing the art for one story in the first issue. Later, they published a three-issue mini-series with Doug adapting stories from the TV episodes. I loved those comics as well as his western Rio and Rio Rides Again. I saw Doug when he was a guest at WonderCon in Oakland. From his panel, I always remember his disdain for Bandit and the censors who insisted Planet of the Apes could not show firearms smaller than artillery lest children imitate them. My brother Stuart and I visited Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. and he told us of visiting Doug and publishing a collection of his western art. Jim also provided information to the Doug Wildey Index. I enjoyed these posts on Doug by Ken Quattro on The Forgotten Art of Doug Wildey and Dave Karlen on Doug Wildey: a "Western" Gentleman. Now to the story of this acquisition. I'd seen the page and some others on Anthony Snyder's website and pondered making a purchase. I decided to wait for the chance to view it in person. On Preview Night, I walked across the Exhibit Hall to Anthony Snyder's booth to see this page. There were a few other pages with the characters, but this action page with the conclusion of a dogfight between Race Bannon and a German World War I ace was the one for me. Any Jonny Quest fan will remember this ending. Thanks to Anthony for a very easy experience. Social/Sharing |

That was a so-so episode for me, but still, anyway Quest cartoon from the '60s is the best! I loved Wildey's work for Comico. Even just getting the books he did covers for was rewarding (tho' the fleshtones were a bit off for Jonny, imo). Thanks for posting this!
