DescriptionA complete WWII-era spiral sketchbook by military cartoonist Mac Cornack, consisting of 10 ink-and-pencil illustrations signed "McCornack" and created around 1942. The artist’s humor blends military life, naval mishaps, and home front absurdities with clean, efficient linework and punchline-driven storytelling. His technique, while simple, shows refined comic timing and composition—suggesting possible training or professional experience, possibly as a staff cartoonist or army newsletter illustrator. His inking reflects familiarity with syndicated strips and editorial gags of the era.Cornack’s visual humor also connects to the gag cartoon format popularized by mid-century outlets such as Gag magazine and other publications issued by Triangle Publications—referenced directly in a handwritten note on the sketchbook’s interior. This clue suggests a possible submission or aspirational connection to the mid-century cartoon market. His line quality, character posture, and comic exaggeration point to classical cartooning influences and reflect practice likely gained through either informal newspaper assignments or military visual communication units. Medium: Graphite and ink on toned sketchbook paper (Spiral Drawing Book No. 503). Each drawing is executed with sure strokes and a preference for heavy outlines, exaggerated proportions, and sparse yet effective backgrounds. Stylistic cues echo contemporary work seen in Stars and Stripes, Yank magazine, and USO camp publications. Provenance: eBay purchase. Item title: “Comic Artist Sketch Book Signed Orig Art Vintage WW2 MacCornack Hitler Military.” Spiral-bound sketchbook format (No. 503) Interior cover also includes a penciled address referencing "Gag" magazine and Triangle Publications (731 Plymouth Ct., Garden Greenbank, SD), indicating a potential submission or career aspiration by the artist. Status: Presumed original. All illustrations signed. Medium graphite pencil and ink on aged, tan sketchbook paper. Acquired July 2024. Social/Sharing |

Lucky this and Mac survived! A lot of artists that served would go on to draw from that experience and excel in war comics. That then led them to other genres later on.

Howard Brodie became a court room artist. If your not familiar with him pull up some of his work. He drew a haunting illustration I believe it is called The Execution.
