Description

On March 25, 1976, Beirut was deep in the throes of the Lebanese Civil War, a brutal conflict that had erupted the previous year. The city, once known as the “Paris of the Middle East,” had become a battleground between various sectarian militias, political factions, and foreign interests.

By this date, the violence had escalated significantly. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was deeply entrenched in Beirut, and tensions between Christian and Muslim militias were intensifying. The Syrian government was preparing to intervene militarily, a move that would soon reshape the conflict. Meanwhile, the Arab Deterrent Force, backed by the Arab League, was being discussed as a way to stabilize the situation—though it would later prove controversial.

A contemporaneous piece by Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas), published in Beirut in March 1976, criticized Arab states for abandoning the Palestinian cause and fragmenting their people. This sentiment reflected the broader disillusionment and chaos gripping the region.
