The situation was further complicated by poor harvests and lingering effects from the 1973 oil crisis, which turned food security into a broader national concern. Government efforts to align economic, agricultural, and foreign policy often clashed, revealing deep tensions in how the country approached food stability at home and abroad.

It’s a full-circle moment where abundance has become its own crisis. One managed not by increasing supply, but by chemically dialing down demand.
