Description

Original pen-and-ink art by Lou Erickson, “Food Bargains,” published in The Atlanta Constitution (Atlanta, GA), Sun., Feb. 11, 1973. This is the actual production drawing used for print (editorial marks/paste-ups may be present). The cartoon ran as U.S. grocery costs were spiking—1973 would see one of the sharpest post-war jumps in food-at-home prices, with meat and poultry leading the surge and eggs soaring year over year; tensions soon culminated in national meat-price protests that spring. A timely slice of consumer history and newspaper cartooning from the thick of the early-’73 inflation wave.
